my thoughts on Melbourne Beats
my thoughts on Melbourne Beats
damn i gotta say it's good having a fresh forum. big up Melbourne Beats. and it's good that it's not just D&B, bit more of a community spirit. i kinda like how every thread is jammed together, rather than MJ (rest in peace) and its continuous reshuffling (did anyone ever use the chat room?). and there's definitely a lot more posting going on.

true that!Ag3nT[]0raNg3 wrote:its already got more posts than MJ had too.
mind you, not having auto-pruning on helps.
agreed. poor, poor form really. what got me the most was the lack of response to anything and random stuff happening all the time.Ag3nT[]0raNg3 wrote:still i do feel for the poor bastards that subscribed to MJ under the impression that it would help. i got quite a good while out of it. but people who signed up a week before it went really deserve a refund. just not on at all that Skot ran off with the cash.
I could never get on to Skot by e-mail/IM/'phone either.

agreed. I paid the money to subscribe, but that's up to the individual.Motive wrote:i never subscribed to mj.com > guess I've never agreed with paying for a forum. i know they take time and some money to run - but $50 from each person is taking the piss.
just dropping the entire site with no warning at all was a joke.
anyway, delegating things out to moderators/admins saves heaps of time anyway - which never happened on MJ. good to see it happening so early on here.
MJ is dead, long live MB - for the reasons posted so far and more.

yeah, but I'm not sure how long MJ was ever hosted there for. it was offshore (USA?UK) for some time towards the end.Ag3nT[]0raNg3 wrote:yeah and doesnt he work at a hosting co or something?
I would have thought so too, especially with the kind of hosting deals you can get these days.Ag3nT[]0raNg3 wrote:surely the amount of cash he had woulda been cool for the next 5 years.
anyway. big up MB and keep up the good work.

yep to both. there was also one of those "vote for me in the ____ top 100!" style links down the footer end of the page too.Friday wrote:i think stores and labels advertised too...Ag3nT[]0raNg3 wrote:had banner ads only for events tho. top and bottom.lucas_chan wrote:It's been a good 6 months since I looked at MJ. The original idea was to have no advertising.
I've been toying with an idea however...
Because I'm not interested in making money from MB (and will be covering all costs myself); I've been thinking of offering free advertising in exchange for having the Melbourne Beats logo on all printed material.
Banner ads aren't normally something small promoters can use because the cost is so prohibitive, so I'd like to do something to change that.
I need to flesh out this idea a bit more however. Because, I'm relucatant to put ads in the forums because the pages load quite fast without them and I'd like to keep page load times down.
What do you guys think?

a fairly good solution, especially if you won't be offering separate classes of users (apart from the usual general/moderator/admin classes of course). a good way to promote the site to people too.lucas_chan wrote:Because I'm not interested in making money from MB (and will be covering all costs myself); I've been thinking of offering free advertising in exchange for having the Melbourne Beats logo on all printed material.
perhaps a dedicated forum is the place for that - i.e. "Promotional".lucas_chan wrote:Banner ads aren't normally something small promoters can use because the cost is so prohibitive, so I'd like to do something to change that.
it'd be good to have the option (in the user profile) to turn the advertising off. not sure how much you want to hack the phpBB files though.lucas_chan wrote:I need to flesh out this idea a bit more however. would be worth developing an offshoot from one of the existing mods though - that way it could be easily integrated via EazyMOD anytime the phpBB install was upgraded.
offering more styles is another way to go - that way if people prefer a "no images" version for ultra quick page renders, they don't cop the ads.
anyway, that's just what came to mind after reading the post.

it wouldn't be hard to implement. let me know if you need any extra fingers, as my day job is knee deep in PHP and CSS.lucas_chan wrote:Actually, that's a good idea. An image-less forum skin. I'll have a look into that one too.

Thanks to Lucas and co.
Its great to be able to keep up with whats goin on in Melbs.
I dont mean to diss but Skot at MJ always seemed to make us feel like we were such a burdon and we were so lucky to be part of MJ (well we were really I guess ). He was almost a Mayrtr for MJ.
Melb Beats:The promo section is a great Idea, banner advertising perhaps is not. Either way thanks so far and good luck to MB in the future!!
