Off Beat - Sunday November 5th - Workshop - IDM, downtempo

Post by universal sea »

Image

The debut of the new monthly Sunday nights at Workshop - Off Beat - introduces Melbourne to regular IDM, downtempo, off-centre sounds, rhythmic ambience, atmospheric drum & bass, dubstep, grime, acid polka, 3/4, swing, instrumental space rock, instrumental hip-hop, spoken word, dub, go-go and funky electronica.

Hosted by Lephrenic and Sea, with special guest easysleeper, and drop ins from drop outs all around the country. Beyond sounds... the other four human senses will be satisfied.

Wind down your weekend with laid back beats in a chilled environment, enjoy the patio on a balmy pre-summer evening. This will be a special, different kind of night.

Date: Sunday November 5th 2006
Venue: Workshop - corner A'Beckett and Elizabeth Street, Melbourne city
Free entry

Recorded for UMFM and Workshop Radio.

Grey Son - bossa nova prog polka with a bit of a spy game twist

FoundationStepper - Your musical catalogue will be quite interesting for something like this, sans freak outs

gb - please send me your 3/4 track! One of these Sundays we're going to attempt a fully 3/4 excursion. sea at umfm dot net, I'd love to hear it.

mr lob - you're too sexy for your shirt

Cool man, I should be putting the finishing touches on it early next week. I've got another one in 5/4 on the burner at the moment, I'll shoot you a copy of that too if you're keen...

Last Sunday we had an excellent rehearsal session. Lephrenic, easysleeper and I rotated, 2-3 tracks each at a time, accustomed ourselves with each other's music catalogues and, for me anyway, figured out the work that needs to be done in the two weeks remaining.

If anybody's interested in a random smattering of our audio, check out this stream at 64kbps, around 3 1/2 hours of excellent toonage. We practiced mixing between styles a lot, which you'll see was quite tricky at times.

official flyer & poster to come soon.

Downtempo is great.

Here are a couple of excellent internet radio stations that play downtempo, IDM stuff, etc.

Buzzoutroom - http://www.umfm.net/radio/stations.php? ... uzzoutroom

Straight up downtempo and breaks - Voodoo Gospels - http://www.umfm.net/radio/stations.php?stationid=143

And for the super glitch lovers - Cliqhop - http://www.umfm.net/radio/stations.php?stationid=43

GB - your 3/4 track is incredible and a prime example of why I think 3/4 and those sorts of time signatures have so much potential in their own right... it's jazzy, a clever drum & bass percussive approach, has a special swingy groove because of the timing. It's great.

It's on my playlist Sunday for sure, and beyond. Top class.

Cheers Sea, glad you liked it. You've got me digging through some of my older stuff at the moment to find any others I've got that don't "fit the grid" so to speak... I'll keep you posted.

Grey Son - I'll try and get something up onto myspace or something, I'm a bit lazy in that regard...

a couple of days away. we have a need for a couple of midgets... we will be setting fire to you temporarily. Drinks will be on the house, though most will be dealing with your fire.

In any event, please reach out to Off Beat staff with your qualifications, the main one being you must be small.

This is in lieu of fireworks, upon which city council frowns grimly.

Thank you for your attention.

I'll be there from 4 or so, we'll be kicking off at 5 with an hour Sea warm up set, we rotate an hour-plus each through to the end.

I'm not going on a bender this weekend so Sunday will be my big night out.

For sure... rumour has it December 3rd has some nutty, surreal kinds of non-musical things planned to complement it.

Have a most excellent gig, loop it up.

The first ever Off Beat weekend has begun in style, kicking off with an Anytime that led a small crew through the wonders of Mai Tai (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) and China Bar. Thanks to Elky and Troopz for taking care of me and making this weekend memorable already.

I'm psyched... tomorrow is approaching, I need a bit of getting my choonage together, which Special Hegg will assist with. Off Beat is close.

Thanks everyone for coming down, I had an awesome and a great way to begin the monthly Off Beat residency. Aside from the slapper who kept requesting Billy Idol, there seemed to be a real vibe in the place and an appreciation for diverse sounds. I hope all the gigs are this much fun.

It was solid... thanks to everybody who came down, particularly the sizeable Melbourne Beats contingent. I could have been more social with you lot. Well done to Griff for showing up and sticking around.

Also I repeat the disclaimer - I am not a DJ! I swung it by the seat of my pants. The recording will sound fine but there is a universe of room for improvement.

Special thanks to Lephrenic and Easysleeper who played majestic sets, and to the excellent Workshop crew.

Next one is December 3rd and it will be more than just the music... off beat theatre is a component in the works to complement it all.

Well done everybody.
