James Ellroy deserves better. The man's one of my literary gods.

Demonstrated aptly by this quote:
The Onion wrote:That must be something you deal with all the time: people confusing your characters' racism for your own.
James Ellroy wrote:You know what? Call me racist, and call me a xenophobe, but I'm not wild about Arab terrorists. I think they're a bunch of camel-fucking motherfuckers. And I want to make fun of them, because I'm a bad guy. And anyone out there who doesn't like it can kiss my ass. It's saying it that's so much fun. I'll admit, in some ways, even though I'm 56 years old, and dare I say a great artist and a wonderful human being and all that, and reasonably sensitive, there's just some part of me that's immature, that likes fucking over people and pissing them off.
Goddammit i love James Ellroy.

Scripticles on Ellroy. I love his work. The Black Dahlia is my second fave of his books so I'm nervous to see it on the big screen but still interested

Saw this on the weekend:

Image

Beautifully filmed. Amazing Mexican scenery and a great non Hollywood style story. Highly recommend it

my boy and i stumbled on a rather weird German film on sbs on Saturday night called Agnes and his brothers.

Weird arse movie and then some....sex addicts, trannies, people killing family members, a dude shitting on a piece of paper while on the phone...ya know, general wacky stuff, well this is the movie for you.

was kinda like a car crash, just couldn't turn away...or turn the channel over :?

I read that... glad someone else appreciated it. Ellroy is a fucked up individual, but he's also one of the most magnificent authors of the 20th century.

He states in that piece that he is a "survivor", but I get the feeling he'll do something incredibly stupid in the next couple of years. He's 58 and only stop doing junk 3 years ago. Then again, he's made it this far into his life with some very heavy demons sitting on his shoulders, so he could go either way i guess.

Saw "All About My Mother" at ACMI on Sunday night. God I love that film and it was excellent to see it on the big screen there.

Pedro Almodovar is a genius I think, and the woman in the film all act so superbly. I was an emotional wreck by the end of the film with 2 deaths and 1 birth :)

Call me a purist then.... going to the cinema for me is all about being in the pitch dark, with a comfy chair and an excellent sound system. Something that I have yet to experience at a outdoor film screening eg. Moonlight cinema or movies at Myer Music Bowl.

Cinema Nova only costs $14, while ACMI is only $13. These outdoors things which offer you less in terms of cinematic screening and more in terms of no roof and endless fresh air, always cost more :S

just saw the movie Crank tonight starring Jason Statham ... I was pretty impressed by it. Great cinematography ... man it wasn't at all what I expected, pretty original.

It reminded me of just watching a fast paced vice city .. or something to that effect.

Scanner Darkly is really good.. the visual style makes you feel like you are tripping the entire movie.

Yeah I bought Renaissance on dvd a couple of weeks ago.. visually impressive.. but I thought it was a bit slow.

Saw Layer Cake over the weekend.

Don't bother, the story and the actors are absalute rubbish. Only thing that remotely came to saving it were some stunning cimeatic moments of London town and social interactions. But the moment the actors opened their mouths it was back to "groans and WTF's"

I give it no layers.
