It's not a shitload of cashola in the scheme of things really (although I'd gladly take it!)...

Maybe throw a little around mastering, CD-production and marketing...

Oh man, so easy...

$700 - Alesis M1 MKIIs - modest but acceptable monitors (Rogue Element can't be wrong)
$500 - SoundAcoustics RK1 room kit
$850 - UAD-1e Express Pak
$900 - Novation Remote SL 49
$300 - 2x Dell 19" monitors for my PC
$750 - Decent security system + insurance
$6000 - Taking 3-6 months off work (living like a poor student on baked beans + bread) + writing music every day, hopefully supplementing my income with DJing on the side

This thread is quite timely. Today I learned that I may soon be coming into some dosh, though not quite this much. When dad told me today, naturally I was like...

:smt041 :headbang: :occasion9: and a bit of Image

My plan thus far is roughly $3000 for a MacBook Pro and around $2000 (hopefully less) for a pair of PMC TB2S+. Down the track I'll want a UAD Xpander and maybe better amplification for the monitors, but those'll have to wait a while.

Exactly.

Fuck deals mate.... Independent all the way (well, to begin with). Just have to hook up a distro.

If someone wants to offer a deal after that, then it's all down to negotiations.

I'd bet you'd get a better deal if you had more to offer from the beginning... Ie. a successful product.

Hegg, mate you can for less money get better monitors and 10" sub, try having a lokk at KRK's, RP8's and a 10" will cost you around $1600, thay have a better frequency response and personally i think they are the tits. Yes i'm bias as i have a pair of rp8's and 10" sub.

Mate, they're not bullshit monitors. Yes there are more expensive ones around, but without the proper studio to go with them, you're throwing your money away.

For a home setup (ie. small to medium spare room in a house), you'll get a *far* better listening environment out of a pair of $700 M1 MKIIs and some proper room treatment than you will from $5000 monitors with no room treatment.

If you disagree with that, it sounds like you need to hit the books.

Too easy, cos I'll be doing this in a few months:

Mac Pro
Apogee Ensemble (or something similar - haven't decided yet)

With a bit left over for coke. :teef:

Already got everything else I need. (it's just that it's all running on and into a shitty G4 with pretty crappy IO...)

There is no better listening environment that will compensate for the fake bass response of the M1's than removing the offending monitors.

Has anyone here actually heard the PMC's? I nearly cried when I heard them, A/B'ing between them and other good brand monitors. They even made the Dynaudio BM6's sound like a cheap ghettoblaster.

Honestly, fuck the price. I would sell my mother for a pair of TB2S.

um.. yeah I use KRK's .

I wouldn't say they sound good..
They're kinda 'Pokey' and not very detailed at all.
any EQjng I've really gotta do in headphones (not a bad Idea anyway)

BUT GOD DAMN IT, THEY TRANSLATE !!.

The mix is right when i play it on ANYTHING else.

Get the mix right on the Krks and it's right on anything.
People used to say that about NS10s and i can't stand how they sound..
i rate them really highly, but I doubt they'd impress in a shop, next to most other monitors. but after a few mixes you get to realise how good they are.
Martin at Edensound asked me 3 or 4 times what i was monitioring on, when we were mastering,
because my bass sat so well..
(P.S. i don't use a sub)

Re Vinyl..
My last Filmclip cost me $500 bucks.
300 records cost $3000.
so in theory, you could do 6 film clips for the cost of 300 records.
which would be better for your career ?

I'm not saying, you would do six film clips. but 2 or three and your CD printing will still come in under $3000,

you could also get about 15 adds in beat.

Re: filmclips...

Would all depend on who's doing them yeah? I'm sure you can get cheaper, and we all know you can get much more expensive ones... but most of the genre's that producers on here would be covering don't usually do filmclips....

Not enough avenues to show them are there?

yeah, my one. (currently being edited) is fukin funny so I'm prob gonna plug youtube as much as I can..
Rage $90 for a digibeta tape (all they accept) and you'll get 2-4 plays.
not bad if they play it late and you get a whole heap of clubbers coming down.

Also Nick has shot independant clips before, and you usually get a good couple of plays outta rage..
depending on the clip of course.

Anyone see the clip John Safron made himself? He got that played on Rage - I'm sure if you've got a decent tune they'd play it.

I'd spend it on music tuition, then mixdown time in a real studio with a bad arse engineer and then finally some very tidy mastering with a name guy once I'd written something decent enough to release.

Anything leftover would be spent on a PR plan / agent to shop it for me.

I'd use it to buy a nice pre amp. A hefty sound card. Some old condensor mikes. A nice comfy chair. Maybe spend the change on building a PC based setup to burn multiple CDr's and an Ink reservoir system to print on them..

Well fine, I'd buy monitors with a better defined low end, but I'd still be very careful not to get ones that are too bass heavy given the room I'd be using, and I still think proper room treatment is *essential* for anyone to get the most out of their monitors, especially in home studios, and especially if you fork out for really expensive monitors.
