The Melbourne Sound
The Melbourne Sound
What do you reckon? What distinguishes the Melbourne sound? Are we just a bunch of chinstrokers? Or is everyone else just too lazy too expose themselves to new music?
My opinion - there is a very distinctive sound for us Melbournites - whether it minimal, dnb, electro, breaks etc.
I bring this up because a mate in perth said we are a bunch of chin strokers.

I reckon the Melbourne sound is no sound. There's not one thing that defines it...variety. If any one sound ever defined a city or region then that'd be pretty boring IMO.
On the other hand, I do hear a lot of Italian disco whenever I'm buying my fashionable items in the city though, i.e. tight, leather pants, poodle purse and Versace shades. Maybe that's what we're known for. Italian disco...not the poodle purse.

I don't think Melbourne has a particular sound.
I thought Toronto and Canada had a particular sound, more on the rock/band side of things, then last night I saw some folksy rock band in Docklands I could have sworn was Canadian-styled music... but really it's just the way music is around the world in western places. Not necessarily brilliant but it's there.
DJ stuff sounds the same here, not too many signature elements that stand out.
I wasn't in Toronto for the dubstep rise there, so maybe Melbourne = wobble indeed.

Hahahaha, made me luff.Special Hegg wrote:The Melbourne sound seems largely borrowed from New Zealand.
Pretty much everywhere some one is going to be "borrowing" sound(s) from someone else that they get inspiration from. Why define a sound to a particular town, city, country where ever...because really it all sounds the same (or similar) one way or another.

Melbourne sound?
I'd reckon with the electric internet being the way it is these days that little "pockets of sound" that are insulated and isolated from the rest of the world are becoming increasingly rare....
I don't reckon we have a signature sound. There's so many different genre's, scenes and people that make up this town - perhaps that's what differentiates Melbourne???
Having said that, I would say we're less commercial than Sydney.

I dont think there is a melbourne sound perse, i mean, it depends on what your talking about, like, is there a sound that we all identify with as being 'from melbourne' or is there a prevailing sound that runs through much of the music produced here, or is there a genre that is played more that is more 'melbourne' than some of the others??
and, it depends on where you go.
certain clubs and areas of the city i think you could safely say were known for loving 'electro', then you might go to miss libs and think that everyone in melbs is into breaks and beats, (or stumble on MB.com and think the same) but you could also go to one love and think that is the melbourne crowd/sound. end up at the tote and the vibe might be that cock rock is the go in melburn town.
chin strokers however, we are not.
i think melbourne people are actually quite spoilt for music, and quite discerning, which may come across as chin stroking, but with such a high concentration of djs, crews and events here, we have earned the right to stroke a cihn now and then as long as we are up front and centre for the gigs/acts we want to support.
i know i am.
some of the interantional acts ive seen here (not just electronic)
actually mean it when they say "i love playin to you guys in melbourne"
and i think that goes across all genres, we know what we like here...
and many of us are qualified to judge what we get served up.
