Laptops

Post by JAMESSSS »

My work are kindly buying me a new laptop.

Price not really an issue within reason.

What is best.

I am thinking a new Thinkpad, although my T60 is still dope as.

Could go Apple, but just found out you can't set focus on window over. Bit upset about that.

Suggestions?

Is there really any point in getting a Mac if I'm just gonna run Ubuntu on it though?

I suppose it looks pretty

T61 has no SVIDEO-out and no line-in from memory. Will have another look tho.

Wide screen one looks fancy

Also really would prefer something with an actual serial port.

Do Macs have serial ports?

no more serial ports with the lenovo kit. i'm a lifelong x-series fanboy, so ended up with a new x60s when the x40 was stolen (booooo). it's still nice, but a little warmer, a little thicker, plus they've added windows keys to the keyboard, so all the bottom row keys are suddenly tiny. plus they've changed the power adaptor. boooo lenovo.

Does Ubuntu run on a Mac?

Would it be a pain in the ass finding apps without having to compile them yourself?

yes, and no, respectively. there are like 18000 packages iirc. (edit: plus powerpc is built at the same time as i386/amd64, from the exact same packages. it's not some lame-arse port after the fact.)

why would you want to install linux on a bsd-based machine?

(no offense intended, foo.)

Good question.

Because thats what I'm comfortable with I suppose. Never really had call to use BSD from scratch. Always been Debian.

Really all I want is Enlightenment.

I suppose it would much easier to just install that.
