I don't know about a Dj Supernova Legand Love pimp  - but each to their own.

I spose it all depends on what other gear you already got??

To dig up an old thread...

Took the advice of Spherix et al and ended up putting this setup together:

Image

The foam installation job sure ain't the most professional, but it serves its purpose.

2 x isolated Mackie HR824s
1 x MOTU Ultralite
Totally silent custom Quad core 2.4GHz PC, 2gb ram, 500GB HDD (thanks Huge!) :)
Ableton Live 6 + a fuckload of VSTs
M-Audio Axiom 25 + a bigger MIDI keyboard daisy-chained off that
A distortion pedal or two for outboard shenanigans
SoundAcoustics RK-1 acoustic foam kit on the walls

Cost me about $5500. Sound quality is superb, the HR824s really impressed me!

Haha, yeah when I recover from this massive sudden expenditure that'll probably be the next thing I upgrade - some dual LCDs would be nice. It's a 22" though so it's not tiny at least. But man, CRTs are soooo fucking dated now. The thing weighs a TONNE.

A1, when your next in the market, check out msy.com.au for a chimei 22" Lcd wide screen for $325, analogue & digital connection. Very nice monitor

im pretty sure having absorption at the front of your mixing environment is not going to do that much (relative to absorption at first reflection points). It looks nice, but isn't that practical. Have a look at studios where serious cash has been forked and you'll notice that infront of the mixing position is usually reflective surfaces (glass, tiles etc). just an unworthy opinion :P (edit: maybe someone could test this by using a spectrometer measuring the differences in absorptive material placement??)

Thanks for the monitor tips - will hopefully be getting one in the next month or so, so will be sure to check it out.

motske, you're right that flat panels of acoustic foam are best placed at the reflection points for maximum effect at the listening position.

I've made sure that the foam covers those areas - on the wall behind the monitors, and mirror points on the side walls. But because you have primary and secondary reflections, and because it's good to have a large "sweet spot" to listen from, it's usually best to be fairly "vague" with your foam placement, ie. cover more area than you need to around the main reflection points. So it was just easier with the amount of foam I had to do a wide swoop around the back + sides.

I haven't done the ceiling though, as it's quite high, and I don't have a ladder. :D But I do have a couple of spare bits of foam left that I can use whenever I decide on the best place to put them. I've considered putting them on the far wall at reflection points, ie. the wall behind the camera when that photo was taken, or on the ceiling.

But regardless of where you put the foam, you should also get the benefit of helping to deaden a live room somewhat (which my room really needs, as it's just walls and a polished wood floor).

And the triangular bits of foam in the wall corners behind the monitors are the bass traps - they're best positioned there, I'm pretty sure of that.

I did a fair bit of reading up on acoustic treatment before I invested some money into it and installed it all, and it definitely sounds better now than it did before. I could use some more bass traps to even out the lower end peaks/dips between 20-300Hz, but overall I'm pretty happy with it.

Yeah..
getting a sub. bout time matching KRK,
should be sweet.

I'm also switching to logic. GULP..

why, you say?

after spending three days mixing my tracks with Danny Bonicci, I found that logic sounds just as good as tools. EQ is WAYYYYYY better. All the stock plugings are 1000x better than tools and it's just a more 'common sense' program.

looking forward to it actually.

whooooot.

nah.. i have at studios.
and they are okay.
I don't own any plugin EQs.
the New EQ3 in tools 7.1 is ok but it still eats your top end.
I found the stock eqs in logic to be pretty damn awesome.
they don't sound thinner when you pull low freqs out.
So i'm sold..

If any of you get Ten Grand I'd hope to see;

Your tunes professionally mastered.
Move to London.
Press some whitelabels.
Hustle/DJ/Whore-Yourself on the Euro-scene
(with cheapo-flights and the Hospitality Club... euro-travel is hell cheap).

Get signed.
(change left over for cheap Yayo  ).

Don't bother upgrading too much... you can generally make a pretty passable job with what you've got and a good engineer will fix 'em up anyway.

Best to get yourself out there whilst you have the cash.

If I had ten grand, I'd be tempted to save another five and get a Fairlight CC1 card.
