Missing school already Mr Obliveus?

They ain't expressing themselves, they're following the status quo of their time.
It's still a form of expression...just one that a lot of others are also doing, as well. It may not be unique, but I reckon it's a valid form of expression that I respect. It's their scene, not mine.

Nah, not missing school. Just not jumping on the anti-emo/whatever bandwagon like others. Kids will always be kids. I wore heavy metal tshirts, ripped jeans and a mullet cuz I wanted to fit into the rocker crowd in junior high...looked like an absolute tosser, too. All part of growing up.

Most play out all the emo kids without really understanding what they're on about. I'm not saying that I do, but I know that, for them, it's serious. The whole style is a way of life to them...a lot like this website forum is for many of us. It is what it is.

I do find it funny that so many people are so quick to always play out the emo kids and how they're just following some bandwagon when a high majority of us followed something similar ourselves when we were that age...in whatever form it may have had in our time.

Kids are meant to do stuff like this. I wonder what they would say about a bunch of grown men and women spending large chunks of their working day hanging out on an Internet forum talking cod shit about dance music.

I agree. I don't like the emo or scenster or whatever trends, and I usually look at them and think "gee you, look like a complete fuckhead", but at the same time I know I followed that shit when I was young too.

I do however find their attitudes damn poor. A very large chunk of Gen Y have the "victim" attitude, which is in my book the weakest and most pathetic standpoint someone can have

I sometimes think that youth subcultures are a direct reflection of sociological pressures... kinda like movies... loads of virus-related and climate change end-of-the-world shit around now.

Kids these days have a shitload more information available to them than I ever did. With this comes marketing pressure and a realisation that the world isn't peachy when they are only just out of nappies.
I wanted to be a hero. I wanted to be the center of attention. I wanted the glory, I wanted the fame. I wanted the pretty girls to come up and say, "Hi, I see that you're good at Centipede."

OB: sure, it's natural for kids to dress different than previous generations and follow their own trends.

It's also natural for the previous generation to bag the shit out of them for doing so!

Nah, fair call OB1. I still reckon they look silly though, and I'm only being honest in expressing my opinions. It's not like I hate the individual or anything, I just find it all amusing.
But the emo/goth thing I don't like, and it's the amount of negativity associated with it that I despise/don't understand the most.

I've met some goths recently, and I reckon they're alrigth people.
I use to hang with goths when I was younger and all this prejudice is just ridiculous.

it's so easy to build up prejudices towards people based on their appearance. i was pleasantly surprised to have a few of mine completely turned on their head at emo. some of the most tattooed, pierced and fucked up looking dudes are some of the loveliest in the place.

it's usually the 'normal' ones that are the rudest and most revolting.

I used to hang with them as well I don;t see that i am being prejudice at all, I was stating a fact of how i did not fit in with how they chose to hang out and live, bnever said it was better or worse, i just said the I failed at goth cause i was to smile smile all the time.

I don;'t see that people are being wrong towards Goth's and the similar trends, what i see are older people taking the piss jsut as it was taken from them when they dressed like idiots at the same age....

Anyone who has actually met me would know i would be the last to judge on what they look like, cause most people would never believe the high level accounts positions i have held due to all the ink on my bod and other crap i do to my hair.

i was just stating a personal observation charlie girl. nothing really to with what you said.

the whole idea of this thread is essentially judging (or taking the piss however you'd rather think of it) these kids on what they're wearing. all i'm saying is that i've appreciated having my own prejudices debunked after having extended contact with them.

for example: always had a thing about neck tattoos...jsut thought they looked shit and that the people who had them were 'hard' or whatever, but two of the nicest dudes at work have them.

same thing goes for some piercings. one guy has at lease 10 scattered across his face (some in positions i have no idea how they stay in), but he is the shyest, most softly spoken kid i've come accross.

maybe both of those points make me sound naive and ignorant, but hey, i'll be honest. i'm sure i'm not alone in thinking it.

so yeah, more a personal reflection than a response to you m'lady.
