Bad Co BIO
When initially released in spring 2000, Bad Company’s debut LP ‘Inside The Machine’ was hailed as a stone cold classic. It came off the back of a devastating trail of massive singles, with ‘The Nine’ – on Grooverider’s Prototype imprint, selling out faster than it was re-pressed.
After releasing other dance floor smashers such as ‘ The Pulseâ€, ‘Four Days’ and the massive ‘Planet Dust’ that built their meteoric reputation, BC catapulted from dance floor destructors to One of the first supergroups in Drum n Bass history.
Maldini and Vegas work together for their Bad Taste imprint, churning dancefloor hits such as ‘Re-Animator’, and have just released a new album from NZ tek masters – The Upbeats. Maldini from Bad Company drops into Roxanne’s to show us why they are recognised as one of the biggest DnB acts of all time. DO NOT MISS THIS!

Beat Mag interview
State Of mind formed back in 2002, did you guys know each other
before the joint venture or was it music that brought you together?
We knew each other but not very well. We were friends of friends in the music. scene, both making electronic beats. Then we one day we were talking, and decided to make a tune together. It worked out pretty well...
Sunking was a massive release in 2005 on CIA, did you guys expect the
tune to do so well and receive international acclaim?
Not at all, we thought the tune was cool but didn't expect a 'cult hit'.
It sunk in when Klute played it actually, before it came out, and we were in the crowd here in Auckland. People all around us went nuts and it was a pretty big rewind. The thing was the crowd had no idea it was a local tune. Thats when we thought 'hey maybe this tunes ok...'.
Who were some early inspirations when you were developing the SOM sound?
The usual suspects such as BC, Ed Rush and Optical, Matrix etc.
You guys have had several releases on loads of high profile labels
such as
1 records, Subtitles and Shogun, any upcoming releases with any other
labels or are you focusing more on your own label SOM Music?
We have a couple coming up on Uprising and BSE, but to be honest our attention has been focused on a new album which will be on S.O.M.
Tell us bit more about the label itself and what artists you've got
lined up?
Well theres two releases so far, 002 is available in a week i think. Then we will release the album on CD plus a couple of 12's to support it. Then we have some other releases to get out by the likes of Chris SU, Upbeats, ourselves and some new Hungarian guys called Spinline.
There's also a new album in the works, is this strictly a SOM affair
or are their any collabs or other styles on the album?
There are collabs, remixes and all sorts of goodies. Its a double CD, but mums the word on any other details im afraid...
Alongside Concord Dawn and a few others, You guys seem to be at the
forefront of New Zealand Drum n Bass, its making massive waves on the
worldwide scene, any plans to tour the rest of the world anytime soon?
Sure we are almost always touring around the place. We just got home
from Europe for instance, we go there three times per year. Pat did Japan last year which was sick. Then theres you guys in Oz of course!
What are some other NZ artists to look out for?
And from the rest of the world?
Well from NZ keep a close eye on Dose, Trei and Cern. Plus the Upbeats are killing it at the moment but they dont need any introduction.
From overseas I really rate Spinline's stuff. Also Chris Su is doing a new album which is dope. Apex is on, Gridlok is on fire and C4C are back...
Ive heard SOM have played to some crowds of 10,000 plus people allover
New Zealand, tell us a bit about these massive events
You are talking about the RnV festival in Gisborne at New Years. That has about 25,000 people. Its pretty epic. The population of Gissy is only 30,000 so the town literally doubles for a week. Last New Years we did mainstage and 2am. That was probably the best two hours of party we've ever played too.
So is one of you lads the "DJ" and one the "producer" ? or is it more
a team effort across the board?
Its pretty much team effort. We are both pretty much do either depending on who feels like being on the road.
Seems to be almost a cult following for SOM in Melbourne!! this is now
you fourth time back for BBA, what can we expect this time around?
Hopefully a good set! Tight tunes from all accros DnB i suppose, but no
minimal & liquid cock snot..
Who's tunes you got in ya bag for this tour?
Gridlok, SKC, Chris SU, Psidream, Prolix, Upbeats. Heaps. Plus some handpicked oldies.
Top 5 tunes ??
1. Gridlok - Heatwave RMX
2. Mastercraft - Paris Upbeats RMX
3. SOM - Awakening
4. SOM - Zion Island
5. Chris Su - Restless
