i used to do that ride to get to work when i worked at the grand.

i used to ride down the train tracks till you get just after jewel station, then turn left and ride on the bike path (not on the rd) on the left hand side of royal parade.
stay on the path and go around past the cemetry and into swanston.
go down swanston and take left once u go over the bridge that goes over sth bank.
once u do that go along the bike trail that goes down along the yarra and u eventually get to church street.

that is by far the safest way to go, the only time u are on the road is on swanston, and where ever u go after church.

ooh yeah good route, i had not thought of the bike path along yarra...

Yeah will do that one i think, better than fighting cars.....

Charlie, Victoria Pde is pretty notorious for bikes, so I'd avoid if possible.

If you really want to stay off the road, you could go Lygon 'til you hit the Capital City Trail (along Park St). Technically, this goes all the way to Richmond, but I'd probably get off at Dight's Falls and take roads from there, coz it gets very indirect. It's a nice ride along the Yarra - much less stressful than roads.

If you will be bike commuting regularly, I'd recommend joining Bicycle Victoria for their crash insurance and making sure you're an ambulance member. Don't want to be alarmist or anything, but it makes you feel a lot safer even if you never need it.

Here's my pansy commuter, got it for wholesale (like 500 less than retail so took advantage of that over an avanti/norco full priced)

^^ I'd go along the river (get on the path just over Swan St bridge), although depending on what time, you might want to avoid Southbank. Go north on Queen's Bridge then William rather than King or Spencer - way less hassle. Should be a nice li'l ride

Theif caught on camera knicking a bike.

Check how easy he knocks it, jumps on the chain to break it and away he goes. This is in Melbourne, by the way.

In other news, my neighbour just had his 3rd bike stolen.

Looks a bit ghey but goes like the clappers. Christened her today with a trip out to Werribee on the Federation Trail - 85km round trip and hardly broke a sweat. Mainly coz it was fecking cold and raining, but still.

There was one point I started struggling about 55km in, but then I realised I had a flat. Other than that, sweet as.

But but but, that's the only bit of that godforsaken road worth riding! Mount Martha and Balcombe Hill FTW! Serial, catch the train to Mordy if you don't want to do the full 100-and-something. Otherwise, if you aren't on a road bike (or can put up with a bit of gravel), mebbe try Main Yarra out to Templestowe? Ain't any hills on the Werribee ride as far as I can remember....

I will do the train trip retzie! It was on the cards for yesterday but i had a late start so I did the Main Yarra Trail (heading South) instead and was heading for beach rd when the day got cut short.

I'll give the Main Yarra heading north a go soon (gravel is good)! It was good to get some hills on that track yesterday and it was a very pleasant trip.

Main Yarra is my favourite! Only problem is when it starts being too short

Nuh, the Federation trail is flat as a tack. It's worth the effort though. Instead of being all naturey it's got this mad industrial thing going on. Lots of scrap metal yards and factories that look straight out of a steam punk novel.

I'm looking at going north east from Fitzroy up to Eltham area with my housemate next w'end. Let me know if you're interested.

BTW, what are you training for?

This is crappy cell phone pic of my bike.

I call her Margot Astrid and she is a 10 speed refurbed into a fixed gear. She gets me around Boston faster than most and I love that. I have only been doing city riding for a year now (and then before that no riding since I was young).
But anyways I love it and I really like riding fixed.
I was thinking that maybe I would give it a go when I come visit if
A) I am comfortable with the wrong/right side of the road issues
and
B) I can rent a fixie.

Actually I would be ok with a single speed too I suppose.
