I started to ride to work recently, used to ride to work when I lived in Cairns but that was years ago. My days start so much better now after the ride in. Get to work all amped ready to get shit done instead of what used to be a slow caffeine induced start to the day! Bought one of these for my commuting and am loving it.

I went to buy some camouflage pants the other day but I couldn't find any.

But but but, that's the only bit of that godforsaken road worth riding! Mount Martha and Balcombe Hill FTW! Serial, catch the train to Mordy if you don't want to do the full 100-and-something. Otherwise, if you aren't on a road bike (or can put up with a bit of gravel), mebbe try Main Yarra out to Templestowe? Ain't any hills on the Werribee ride as far as I can remember....
Thanks for the tips Retzie.

I did Main Yarra trail to Templestowe on Saturday and it was lovely. Beautiful bush trails and rolling hills. Made a good change to go on gravel.

Sunday I did Beach Rd. Olivers Hill nearly ate me alive and the hills of Mt Eliza were hard work after 50+ km of flat road. Next time I'll try to do those hills at the start of my ride, not the end. It was amazing how few lycra lads there were on the road AFTER Mordy. Not many up for those hills and I can see why!

No worries :smt023. Half the challenge of training is not going out of your mind in boredom.

Yup. And no lycra warriors :D. I'm told that if you're really after hills, you can't beat Mt Pleasant Road in Eltham. Something like a 5km ascent Image. It's easy enough to get to from the top of Main Yarra (mind you, there's the fuck off Fitzsimmons Lane hill in between...). So there's one to aim for ;)

Haha, it's cheating to skip the 50km lead up :P. I was always so relieved to hit the hills after Beach fucking Road - all the lycra fuckwits wuss out and you're finally out of the wind. For extra burn, don't stop at Mount Martha - keep going to the top of Balcombe Hill . (Or if you're a braver woman than I, go down Balcombe Hill and turn around and ride back up Image)

Ok, thanks for those new tips. Luckily I am fast running out of training weekends before I head off for my OS ride. Only 2 left! I will look up Mt Martha and Balcombe Hill if I think I need further training punishment.

I couldn't find the join from the main yarra trail to the Eltham trail. Damn I wish they'd sign the tracks better! I don't want to have to carry the bike track book with my while i ride :S

You're right about the boredom factor. I always train on my own so that probably makes it worse. riding with 7 others on the trip might freak me out LOL.

Not that it helps much now, but the track runs alongside Fitzsimmons road

RMIT design school. whilst you are there you can also pick up a pair of black levi stovepipes and an edgy fringe.

been meaning to mention in this thread that cops are cracking down on not having bells on your bikes. i believe the fine is like $60. by law you need a bell on your bike whether you are on a trial or on the road.

Just bought an old old Cinzia ladies folding bike... not in the best condition.. wondering if anyone knows where (in melbourne) you can get these thing restored?

Frame is really good shape, some of the chrome parts are pretty rusted, still totally usable though, just look a bit crap. needs some work on the wheels and the brakes.... some buckling in the wheels and the brakes need new cables and pads.

dunno if the gears work (internal) as it's currently unrideable.

it's like the one in the pic on this page....

any help/comments appreciated.

How easy is it to straighten up ones wheels (its just a shogun hybrid, wheels slightly out not major buckle) - something worth learning or just leave it to the pros?

can be done easily with a spoke key and a piece of chalk. but best to practice on a few wheels that you don't care about at all before tackling your own bike

hold piece of chalk near the rim and spin the wheel. chalk will touch the high spots (buckles) and leave a mark. using the spoke key loosen the spoke a half turn at the spot closest to the buckle. then tighten the spoke on either side of the one your loosened by a quarter turn. repeat until all buckles gone (ie chalk draws evenly across rim when the wheel is spun)

just go down the tip and grab a few old wheels that are laying around. they work fine for practice.

anyone know of any road bikes going missing over the last couple of days?

today and yesterday, dodgy/junkie looking bloke has come into my work, yesterday with a charcoal grey FELT, today with a white and red SCOTT

both bikes looked fairly high end, especially the scott

i asked him today where he was getting the bikes, his reply was "from the bike shop i work at".......i asked him which shop, he said "one in the city"...........when i asked "oh yeah, which one in the city?" he said "i can't be too specific"

i'm prepared to go out on a limb here and bet anyone $1000 that this bloke has never worked a day in his life, let alone a job in a bike shop that sells expensive road bikes

i'm gonna call the cops and see if they're interested in any cctv footage, in the meantime, keep an ear out

Had my first bike stack in about 6 years of riding nearly everyday.

Got hit by a car whilst swerving to avoid a van. Driver of said car was in more shock than me.

God my hip hurts but no broken anythings.

I promise to get my brakes fixed TOMORROW!
