"Plant consciousness has long been seen by many as a crazy idea proliferated by hippies and the such like. We can physically experience the concept of our own consciousness and are therby willing to extend it to other humans simply on the basis of a common sense conception of it. We are willing to give weight to the concept that animals are conscious on the basis of one on one interaction at the very least with higher order animals. We can see and interpret their behaviour in such a way that not giving them consciousness seems absurd. On the basis of this interaction we are even willing to grant consciousness to lower order animals and find many examples of evidence to back up such claims. However, when the same evidence is produced to verify the existence of plant consciousness it is not taken seriously. It is a common misconception to believe that no such evidence exists, it does. Much of this evidence is based of scientific experiments but it is very difficult to entirely isolate the experiments as the experimenter plays a very important role which has been under estimated by much of the scientific community. There is other evidence of plant consciousness with a much less empirical and rational basis behind it. People claim to have had psycic communication with plants and other experiences of a similar nature, these are much more difficult to verify unless you gain personal experience of it yourself."

My opinion...

Seriously the most advanced life form on earth. Plants.

Not only have plants of various kinds been around for longer than most but they have also developed the ability to live for extra ordinary long periods.

How?

Well we know they breath like we do, but in reverse. And we know many/most/all? have blood, in the form of sap. We now do know that they do communicate, in fact it has been proven that some trees ability to communicate and pass on warnings about a new disease is amazingly simple, quick and effective. It can occur over the span of as little as 2 generations of seeds for a tree to develop amunity to a threating disease. And how do they do it? Well they have slowed the whole god damn process down. Chilled the frig out. Hardened the fuk up. They just sit there, breathing slowing, being all wood and stuff.

Respect tree dude, you are like totally the most awesome thing to inhabit this here planet. Sorry I have to hurt you.

"In 1966, Cleve Backster performed an experiment that should have revolutionised the way we think about plant consciousness. He rigged a dracena cane plant (above) up to a polygraph test in order to work out its rate of water consumption however, the result was not as expected. The results of the polygraph test showed a much more human like response. A lie detector is used on a person in such a way that when they detect a threat to their well-being they produce a physiological response. The concept behind them is that they stress human thinking and emotional reactions. When Backster even thought about setting alight to a leaf of his plant he found the following reaction.

Then at thirteen minutes, fifty-five seconds chart time, the imagery entered my mind of burning the leaf I was testing. I didn't verbalize, I didn't touch the plant, I didn't touch the equipment. The only new thing that could have been a stimulus for the plant was the mental image. Yet the plant went wild. The pen jumped right off the top of the chart.?

From this point on Backster started a succession of experiments that he believed showed that the plant was in tune with his emotions. He could leave the plants alone for a length of time and sit in a bar, talking with friends and the polygraph test would measure the ups and downs in the conversation that Backster was experiencing.

This was not only true of Backster?s emotions, when he poured boiling water down his sink, killing all of the microbe life that lived there, the plant responded, violently reacting to their deaths.

Backster reached the conclusion that the polygraph tests showed that plants have "primary perception". He doesn?t call it extra-sensory perception in the way that we would if a human were to exhibit signs of being able to read the emotions and intentions of those around him, as he doesn?t see that plants have the basic senses in the first place.

Experiments with polygraphs have in fact been replicated by numerous academic laboratories worldwide, some of which are cited at the end of Backster's book. Since his original experiments in the 1960s, plant electrophysiology has advanced a great deal, and simplified tone-emitting devices are now commercially available which validate the concept of instantaneous biocommunication, at least between plants, see MyFirefly. This indicates that Backster's research is replicable

If what Backster claims is true then it could be very possible that plants do have consciousness but that it is on a different level to our own so much so that we do not perceive it particularly well. It could just be our prejudicial nature which lead to our inability to recognise consciousness in any form other than our own."

"One laboratory researcher created a maze like-structure with several blind alleys then planted a vine (below) at the closed end. The only way for the vine to reach light was to correctly navigate its way through the maze. The vine made its way out without making a single error"

"Pierre Paul Sauvin, an electronics specialist thought he could take advantage of this strange interaction and harness it as a useful force. He managed to run an electric train (above) around a track reversing its direction in response to his thoughts and emotions by channelling them through a plant. He even managed to do this experiment on television so as to give more lasting proof of his research. The problem with experiments of this thought was that as Backster had observed with his experiment, the experimenter was as much a part of the experiment as the plant was and so the sensitivity of the human involved was vitally important. This is why so many experiments with plants have proved failures when subjected to analytical unfeeling tests by the scientific community at large. You need to have truly green thumbs for the plant to trust you."

awesome discussion.

I used to read about Kirlian photography...how when you take a Kirlian photo of someone's hand when they're healthy and one when they've got a headache or whatever, the "aura is completely different, and in terms of the headache, the coronian discharge around the pressure points of the hand that represent the head are all flarey and crazy like. They did the same with plants...a simple pin prick into the leaf would cause total upheaval in the colours produced in the Kirlian image.

But I think Kirlian photography has been disproven since I used to read about it, claims of damaged or unclean equipment causing the different outcomes...

Whenever I pick a plant from the garden, or a flower or whatever, I internally ask if it's ok. 99% of the time I don't get any feedback but sometimes I might get a little twinge that says don't do it. So I don't. I know it sounds nuts but if I'm wrong there's no harm done. If I'm right, I'm doing a good thing getting permission.

On a day long past an artist wrote on a wall, it was not a real wall, but a wall held in space, he wrote of his passion for the beat, for the creative element he loved in his world, the beat that moved those he respected to walk down the street. The artist was surrounded by the beat. Time passed by, and the understood become blurred, it became contrived, it became unclear. Those who passed by the wall no longer continued when they could not understand, they stood and commented, they tried to contribute. When they still did not understand they passed by. Those who did understand stayed, they listened, they learned, they added their view. More time passed by, and the wall became less creative, it became less. Passers by now thought they could add anything. So they stayed. And the wall became wet, and the rain blurred the colours. The colours, ran. And nothing became something. And the beat changed.

and it got to the point where all music and all art knew no boundaries, knew no limits and categories, and the people who passed by just appreciated, and added their bit and out of the brown wash came designs and delights nobody had first imagined, and they all stood aruond and cheered each other on, and patted backs and picked up the new arts and meduims and threw them into the mix with glee and abandon, and it became an entire world of art and music to rival any of the ancients, to inspire the aliens both here and not here yet, and then, it became a decade of rainbows and the word genre was replaced by the word everything and most people embraced this change while some others plugged in more and lost sight of the horizon.
and we called it the beginnig of the end, and we nurtured it and made it something and we are proud of it and it is nearly time guys, nearly time.
