Jaco

end of story

Tough choice...

Jaco's easily the best, but I don't like his style much. Stanley Clarke is great, as is Patrick O'Hearn. But for funk, technique and tone, Ralphe Armstrong would have to be my favourite.

Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco Jaco :) :D :) :D :) :D

Oh yeah, also in top contention would have to be JAMES JAMERSON, undoubtedly the most underated musician of the last 50 years. He basically invented the whole style of playing that every other bass player you could mention plays and that most modern funk style music is heavily reliant upon. Even Jaco's playing wouldn't ever have been what it was without James Jamerson. A Fucking ledgend

and if its based on dying relatively poor and un known in the wider scheme of things, it would have to be jaco- but personal fave would be mingus for his moving tribute to lester young performed live just after he got word of his death.

Hey, is Jamerson from the Motown sessions???

Can't believe Flea didn't get a mention - maybe not the best, but not half bad!

James Jamerson...and yes he is from the motown sessions. He pretty much played on every big hit from motown in the 60's. An absolute freak.

there are many different modes and grooves for playing the bass
so many different amazing bass players

but if i had to vote, id go Pastorius
if you saw this video of Jaco playing Portrait of Tracy i have
you'd probably vote the same

edit: if i have to choose someone living
id go Victor Wooten of Bela Fleck & Flecktones

also very left field.... but he is the best bass player I have ever seen in my life....

Dave Slave - Sadistik Exekution (from Sydney)

I've never seen someone handle a bass like he can. Even Stuart Hamm (Steve Vais bass player) when conducting bass clinics in OZ... took the bass right off Dave cause he was showing him up.... Classic day that was.

Besides being the sickest bass player I knew... Dave was also one of the sickest peeps I knew too... not gonna go there.....

^^ He's the figure-head for GK, and writes some of the most solid grooves I've heard... I know it's all a matter of opinion (excuse the GLR rip), but the man can play!

I'm a fan of the "Iconic Female Bassist" and as such I am nominating Kim Deal of The Pixies. OK, not technically the best in the terms we've been discussing, but surely one of the coolest chicks in music.

if we're going on the 'iconic' female bass player tip I'd have to go with Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth for so many reasons, and she is still rockin now. Kim Deal = Big Deal, junkiw washed up with one riff in 12 years, Cannonball.

Always found Sonic Youth's feedback squall a bit over rated myself. But whatever floats your boat, *I* have manners enough around here not to diss *your* choice......
