Music Categorisation?

Post by J0rdz »

Was interested to hear how all of you categorise your music?
Im currently in the process of categorising my entire vinyl collection and aren't too sure how i want to categorise it all. Currently im thinking of going by genre, then alphabetically - but i have alot of really old vinyl, so im tempted to look at somehow splitting them by dates. But it might take too much work!
Anyway, how does everyone have all their music categorised? Only interested in physical categorisation tho!!

Go the 'High Fidelity' approach. :D

I go by genre, then alphabetical through each genre. I love organizing my records...it's zen!

genre - then studio / theme

e.g. under reggae - studio 1, and rocksteady/ska, then vocal, then dubwise, then digital reggae, then digidub

I like genre then chronological but that gets difficult if you want your artists grouped together (and who doesn't?!) so now, mine are genre and loosely chronological, which is ok at the moment because I only have a few hundred records, but I'm not sure how long I will keep going with this system.

It instantly comes to mind every time i organise my music. I always end up giving it a watch after im done, its great.

Looking like genre then alphabetically.
I was hoping to somehow keep record labels grouped, but thats looking way too hard with labels that span across a few genre's.
It's hard keeping track of remixes and shit like that too.

I wonder how the big guns categorise all their records? You'd think they'd have some kind of search function, similar to what a library would have... now that would be cool!

i mean to enter all my records on discogs (you can keep a personal database) for insurance purposes. perhaps you can use that database to add shelf locations etc?

Im sure there would be some way! You can export your Discogs collection to an excel spreadsheet, so it wouldn't be too much of a hassle. Cant see it being worth it unless you've got a really huge collection tho.

On a side note - would a discogs list work as valid proof for insurance?

Genre split into groups I would mix together.

I just tend to know where everything is for some reasons though?

Genre, and then similar artists. I also have the genre's in order, I.e. beats section together etc.

Having mates over in 2 nights and had to clean up my back room.

Finally put all my records away from my gig bags which haven't been used in 2 years (Serato hack that I am). My funk/soul section became overran so now I have this new genre on my shelves...CLUB SELECTIONS THAT AREN'T HIPHOP OR REGGAE! How to get from Donna Summer to Modeski, Martin & Wood to James Brown to Gomez to Steve Miller in 5 easy steps...

I so want to do an Excel sheet of my collection, but it will take too long. Cant be bothered.

:D

One issue I have with genre splitting is how far do you go: do I seperate rock from punk? post-rock from post-punk? does australian music get it's own section? do I put the soul with the jazz or the rock?

And OB, get your kids to do the excel spreadsheet for a nominal fee. That's what I did.

ps: Over the weekend I had a cracker of an idea.

Arrange record collection by Dewey Decimal number of subject material.

The only one true way forward.

Fantastic idea. I reckon my 8-year old can do it now. Make him earn his keep...

Easiest way to get an Excel spreadsheet of your collection would be to start a list via Discogs - means you can search via Cat number, etc. Then once your list is complete, theres an option that allows you to convert it to an Excel spreadsheet. It's really handy!
From there you can edit all the fields accordingly.
