rudeboy midi routings
rudeboy midi routings
EDIT: I'll just cut to the chase rather than explaining why I want to do this...
any reason why you can't send midi from ableton to my soundcard's midi-out, and run a cable straight back in to the midi-input, and receive the messages in live again?

Re: rudeboy midi routings
cant think of any reason why not - mac or pc
on Mac use the IAC bus rather than cables though
you can send midi from channel to channel in live post and pre fx if you want to record midi effects

Re: rudeboy midi routings
Midi Yoke for PC, showerman.
Re: rudeboy midi routings
the cable, she's a the not work. Not sure if my ports are fucked or if there is something fundamentally flawed in what I'm doing. I'll test out the ports tomorrow with some controller.
Midi from chan to chan wont work I don't think because I need it to be simultaneous remote control of parameters across the board, including audio effects params. etc.
Clip envelopes wont cut it for a number of reasons.
I'll try out midi yoke cheers Leigh.

Re: rudeboy midi routings
actually, the midi cable loop does work now. Perhaps it wasn't plugged in properly.
Rad.
I think we can now safely say I have 'bare control'.

Re: rudeboy midi routings
nice to hear there is a lo-tech solution -
there is a tom cosm clip on using midi cc in clip envelopes via IAC bus on a mac - which you could emulate in midi-yoke - or even try plogue bidule

Re: rudeboy midi routings
few teething problems, but its working like a dream now.
Excelent stuff.
Could quite easily use this to run VJ software from ableton, match things up to your music etc. shiteloads of potential.

Re: rudeboy midi routings
Having a go at this now. Got myself a demo of ArKaos - running it from a midi channel in live. Pretty easy to use, just need to find enough material really!flippo wrote: Could quite easily use this to run VJ software from ableton, match things up to your music etc.
might put that one on the back burner
Re: rudeboy midi routings
geeking out hardcore here.
I've got a master program midi track which I use to set live up for each movement/track/song or whatever.
Launching the clip for a given section in my set will -
- switch the chain selectors on my effects and instrument racks to the new settings I need for that section
- launch a new VJ sequence for that section
- rename the tracks to appropriate names (eg 'bongos' and 'guitar', instead of audio 1 and audio 2) (not actually going to use that tbh, just testing out midi > keystroke translations)
- change my rewired reason combinator presets.
also got emergency clips for when I get lost, like fading out all sends and/or returns, centering all track pans, fading all gains back to normal positions.
these clips are themselves all mapped to scenes in my padkontrol. so it goes
midi controller in > midi clip launch > midi out > midi yoke > midi in > remote control
..................................................................................... or> bomes midi translator > keystokes
..................................................................................... or> reason
..................................................................................... or> arKaos VJ software
Benefit of going via clips is that you can hit the midi early it will be quantized to go in a bar or whatever, or you can just have it as part of a scene. And you can have custom clips to do combinations of all sorts of things so you dont need to be an octopus.
ok..... less geek now...

How much more potential for extra rudebwoyism do you think you have?

Re: rudeboy midi routings
I'm detecting a 10% increase in potential rudeboy
Re: rudeboy midi routings
Does that translate directly to 10% barer control?

Re: rudeboy midi routings
How smooth are the transitions when switching presets, etc? No weird lurches or anything?
Re: rudeboy midi routings
For the most part its fine but I have run into trouble for more drastic changes.
If you want to swap some drum kit sounds over, move some audio FX chain selectors, morph reverb send from a dry room to a dark hall etc, no probs at all. Little bit of a CPU spike but nothing that will freeze the screen or cause an audio drop.
but changing reason combi patches, for example, you need to give some breathing space between the sounds. Can't have a combi patch with a bunch of rex loops suddenly change into a maelstrom patch and not drop audio. I'd imagine a lot of 3rd party VST's would suffer the same problem, haven't tried it with many yet though. I can't imagine something like absynth being able to do it without complaining a little.
The original idea I had to combat this was to have two complete sets of tracks assigned to X-fade A and B respectively. You could prep track B while track A was playing, and everything would be honkey dorey and ready to go in time for the fade. But it was way too messy and hard to keep track of. Visually it was just fucking confusing having that many rows of tracks too.
Best alternative I've found is to have just one channel on X-fade B, which has a looper on it. You just record whatever bars you want to it and cross over to the sampled version. That way whatever messiness results from preparing all the devices for the next session doesn't go to the master out.
If that option gets old there are other things like reverb swells and delays on the master bus to allow for some time for live to compose itself. These have been working well.
Still early days really! Just really want to nut out how I am going to approach it before doing too much work.

Re: rudeboy midi routings
FYI: anytime you send MIDI through a physical MIDI-In you should expect to be adding about a 2ms latency to the data stream...so you'd be best off pre-delaying your master MIDI shenanigans by about 2ms to make sure your strobes are in fact in time or whatever.
Re: rudeboy midi routings
cheers Arkation.
I think it's probably more important for me to have the lowest latency possible between my intial midi input and audio output, rather than keeping the audio and video perfectly in sync after that. I'll look into the best compromise though thanks mate.

Re: rudeboy midi routings
Do we need to update the percentage of control bareness after this new infobomb?
