Re: the news thread
im on skype with my friend up there ....
they have evacuated the hospital, the beaches.
cairns is predicted to be 7metres underwater. no electricity for 2 weeks possibly. people are fighting in supermarkets for food. the birds are not chirping anymore, everything is still.
my friends have left their houses and are hiding up at Mount Molloy with 9 adults, 1 baby, 3 cats, 3 dogs, and 1 python.

category 5 down to category 2. Hate to ask the question, but was it sensationalised journalism or something? That is a big difference.

but tbh the BOM don't lie, it lessened off quite a bit before hitting shore thank fuck.

Re: the news thread
Dan - no dah, they are saying it wasn't a category 5 though. It also didn't hit where they said it would. That house did get cut in half yes (nice grabbing of photo from the Herald Sun), however it generally missed Cairns and Innisfail. Everywhere is badly damaged, but not destroyed. And thank goodness. I am just wondering why there is so much of a dramatic difference in what was reported to occur.
but thankful they were wrong

maybe they are scared shitless after the floods. dont blame em tbh.
better to get everyone scared as fuck so they stay inside than play it down at all imho.

Re: the news thread
The BOM map includes the category along the path. It was definitely Cat 5 shortly before hitting land. There is absolutely no way to fully predict any weather event, let alone something this massive. It's all based on mathematical models, which work on probabilities and are never absolute (apparently, an early model had it hitting Brisbane!!) Unfortunately, the media aren't so good at conveying "this is our best guess."
Given the calls after both Tracy and Larry were "Why weren't we warned?" you can't really blame them for hammering it. Jeebus, if they have really managed to avoid any loss of life, massive props
Interestingly, there has been fuck-all reporting of it here. It seems the big winter storm has used up all the weather column space

Retz and GK - yeah really good points. Instilling fear to make sure people do the right thing was probably necessary regardless of what was going to happen.

and the scariness begins. we can already see bloody Julie Bishop jockeying for opposition lead. God help us if this woman gets anywhere even near the job of Prime Minister. Having said that I do agree with her on this (i won't make a habit of it), cutting foreign aid to Africa is a stupid idea.
Thankfully it looks like Joe Hockey is doing some positioning as well. I reckon Joe Hockey as leader is the smartest thing the opposition could do, he'd blow Gillard completley out of the water.

does this strike anyone else as totally retarded? raise money for victims of gun violence by selling guns?Firearms found to have been stolen or used in a crime will be handed over to the police, while others will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to victims of gun violence,
do they also plan to raise money for cancer sufferers by selling cigarettes?

they could sell them to the police or, if she is not wanting to make money from them, just get them destroyed. i think victim of gun violence would appreciate that more
