The Aussie pf is served with a pea soup, rather than mushy peas.breaksRbest wrote:I justy thought they were English coz of their weird fascination with mushy peas
Again from wikipedia...
Mushy peas are dried marrowfat peas which are first soaked and then simmered with a little sugar, salt and a sometimes touch of mint, until they form a green lumpy soup. Green colouring is often used. (The more pure the mushy peas, the less obviously bright the colour - peas with few additives tend to form a more grey-green end product). Sodium bicarbonate is often added to soften the peas, enhance the colour and to inhibit fermentation during soaking which reduces later flatulence. They are a very traditional northern English accompaniment to fish and chips, or in the north-west are commonly served as part of the popular snack of pie and peas (akin to the Australian pie floater, but with mushy peas instead of a thick pea soup) and are considered a part of traditional British cuisine. Mushy peas can also be bought in tins.
Not to be confused with Cheesey peas, which are a comedy fiction
Free to those that can afford it, very expensive to those that can't.

make my own puff pastry, pie mix and all that, use a nice chili oil for garnish on the soup.. i recon it might be a winner

Some sources claim the recipe originated in New Zealand, while others claim it was invented in Australia. However, like the Anzac biscuit, the earliest known books containing the recipe were published in New Zealand.
Professor Helen Leach, a culinary anthropologist at Otago University in New Zealand found a pavlova recipe in a 1933 Rangiora Mothers' Union cookery book.[2] Professor Leach also has an even earlier copy of the pavlova recipe from a 1929 rural New Zealand magazine.[3]
Keith Money, a biographer of Anna Pavlova, wrote that a chef at a hotel in Wellington, New Zealand, created the dish when Pavlova visited there in 1926 on her world tour.
The claim that it was an Australian invention states that the pavlova is based on a cake baked by Bert Sachse at the Esplanade Hotel in Perth on 3 October 1935. Sachse's descendants believe he may have come up with the recipe earlier than that, since Anna Pavlova visited Australia in 1926 and 1929 and died in 1931.
