Wireless Internet, Hotspots and the new Testra Cable...

Post by DBoy »

Just downloaded downloaded 56.3MB in 2min 33sec @ 380KB/sec.
That has to be the quickest I have ever downlaoded anything.
Just got me thinking about who uses what connections, who gets what speeds.
Who uses Wireless routers, and also what hotspots around Melbourne are good for use.

I know Miss Libertines offers free wireless hotspot and have a1 connnection, anywhere else you recommend?

Nah you have to pay. No idea how much I've got a free account.

Pretty dope tho. Coverage is pretty much most of the CBD.

So it's a free wireless hotspot where you have to pay?

What exactly is free about it?

EDIT: is it free up to a point perhaps?

I was clocking 1.3Mb/s from Apple.com on the weekend.

Wireless router to my Macbook. I have gotten faster with iiNet ADSL 2+, though.

As for hotspots, haven't really used any, but I can safely say we are so far behind the rest of the planet, it's just too depressing to even attemped a CBD hotspot (not including private businesses offering free wifi like the Lounge, E-55, Workshop, Blackcat, etc etc..)

I use a NewsGroup server in conjunction with my ADSL2+ and get a
consistant 2megabytes a second.

It's great, you can have a full feature length 700mb movie done in 6 minutes.

:)

The Newsgroup is great too, has everything I could ever want. Games, Movies, TV.

I've yet to search for something that it doesn't have.

It took me about 5 - 6 minutes to d/load a 600Mb file

I'm on iiNet ADLS2+ and have a Wireless Router

I did a test on the router and apparently I'm not getting the D/L speeds that I should be

I don't really 'need' it to be any faster than that, but if it it wants to I wont stop it

[edit: and as for wireless hotspots, 5 Star Hotels are always a good bet. I've sat out the front of several and 'stolen' their connection. You can also buy Hotspot Detectors so you can walk/drive around and it will tell you when you're in range of one. Never used it though]

Genuinely confused here.

Why does Kitty and Dboy say it's free @ Lounge & Miss L's?

I've had downloads at around 500 kilobit/sec with iinet. But ultimately it seems to depend on how fast the site you're downloading from can upload.

Because they pay a provider, and you pay them (via means of purchasing a coffee, beer, etc).

It's not free from Telstra, Optus, etc.

No I gathered it wasn't free from the provider.

Understand it's a marketing tool for clubs/bars/cafe's etc to bring people in and hopefully fleece them for coin.

Just wasn't sure on limits etc... thankyou all.

I was thinking about this too, if i moved into a new house and did not want to get a phone line.

My mate has 'wireless' - he says it is ok for his needs, emails and web, not downlaoding. It is a return to the low limit and slow speeds once the limit is broken I believe.

Any other providers doing wireless into homes with out a phone line?

Anyone tried real world performance of the NextG network? maybe with a PCMCIA card or something.
I understand the theorectical maximum speed is supposed to be pretty amazing.

theoretical maximum of hsdpa is ridiculous, though most rollouts are only 3.6MBit or 1.8MBit/sec.

I have had 1700Kb/s with TPG.... fitzroy area.

dunno about speeds here as we currently only use a standard ADSL modem on an ADSL 2+ connection. Turns out a standard modem can actually go up to 8mb/s if you have it connected to a network that supports those speeds.

i use unwired, got given the modem.
pretty reliable
not so fast (only a 512k connection)
not so cheap (2gb a month for $55 or 12gb for $90 at 512k)

but this way i don't need a home phone and i'm not locked into anything.

unwired is fine if you're happy with a fairly slow (80k/s) fairly expensive connection.

Holy shit, I just downloaded a 17 track album off iTunes in under 30 seconds.

Make that 48 songs (3 albums + a few singles) in just over a minute.

its pretty depressing to know that the average connection speed in south korea is 75Mbits/s...

all we have is Helen Coonan telling us that "most" Australians have access to "fast" connection speeds.

bah.

HSDPA is great for mobile communications but a joke for anything else. we need fiber... stat.

I'm beginning to think these days I'd be happier with slower speeds (512+) if I still had a decent monthly download limit (20+ Gb).

However, all the ISPs seem to have decided that fast speeds and small quotas are the way to go.
