haha, yeah i spose you could look @ it like that. or that its just got way less RAM hogging features that are pointless and a more a pain in tha ass than a "feature"
*sends shepherd a nudge!*
msn rocks!
=_=
but really google is worth it just for the intersnet phone feature

clumsy interface
no emoticons - yeah i know it doesn't matter but many people find this important.
no users - this will change obviously. But IM lives and dies by its reach.
lack of integration - with msn you can search for flights/jobs/music/info in the window - same with yahoo ... with google you can't do anything else.
no personality - IM has become highly personal with avatars and meego's and whatever else ... google is plain so you can't express your personality through it.

IM is massive with 10-17 yo's and it's feeding msn good $$$ ... this is the audience people are making money from ... how will google tap into this market and try and realise their over the top perceived market value.
It's great it's simple but I think people like msn and yahoo and the fact they do have a lot of bells and whistles they may/may not use
this will stay in beta for 12-24 months - it won't work for google until they become more than a search engine and start doing content. They can't make money off it under the current model.

but yes true, and i would agree with what you have said about the people that use MSN. i for one am looking for an alternative to the spammy nature of it and dont like putting up with its bullshit. so for users such as me, google has really hit the nail on its head.

i think comp geeks are the minority - google aren't trying to hit this audience, the geeks love them already.
the VOIP PC to PC thing isn't really changing the world - it's a slow burn. Google are the third to enter this (after Yahoo and MSN) which isn't going to do much for their innovator status.
When VOIP goes PC to phone like Skype (who incidentally have been named as a potential Google takeover target) then it will go crazy.

I can dig, though I like it, it serves its purpose, plus it doesnt bother me will bullshit. A few memory leaks here and there, but nothing an upgrade wont fix.saintberry wrote:Trillian, man, im going to restrain hard from flaming that proggie - dont know why but ive never been a fan. some pople go nuts over it tho.

i had trillian but the cracked version I got stopped working after a while.
funnily enough it was I only had an msn login!
How will google apply Adwords to IM??? It'd be even more creepy than gmail already is if when you typed a sentence to an IM buddy it came up with google adwords based on your sentence.

I always used jabber (winjab) for years until I discovered trillian and I've never looked back... I love the lack of ads and spammy stuff. I HATE bells and whistles that only serve advertising and the like. Yahoo and msn started to shit me about 6yrs ago...
I'll give the gtalk thing a go, I like the looks of it, yet to see if it's gunna be useful though

I use Miranda another multiplatform messenger, allows access to all including googletalk.
How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go?

i was a mirandia user for about a year before i got sick of it....its a top piece of software (the shell) but alot of the plugins are pretty poorly coded.
sweet that you can customize absolutely anything about it tho...even the menus!

i reckon that's the main reason why google works (as a search engine). they recognise that you're looking for sites other than their own, and don't try to keep you on theirs.shepherd wrote:this will stay in beta for 12-24 months - it won't work for google until they become more than a search engine and start doing content.

Well though I agree that the interface is rather plain, the cool thing about google chat is that it uses the jabber protocol, which is open source, meaning there is lots of other software that you can use to access it, like psi. Google has always been about simple interfaces anyway.shepherd wrote:clumsy interface

In addition, google has bought a 5% share in America Online, meaning that Google chat will also be able to connect with AIM users.
As for integration, it seems to me that msn is becoming more and more like bloatware, trying to be everything for everyone - whats wrong with using your browser for searching - all they are really trying to do is lock you into using their own services..

jabber is the bomb.... I was a big fan (until I found trillian)... I liked the server-side interface rather than trillain's client-side interface. Pity none of the client software packages were up to sratch at the time (they may be now I haven't looked for years). I used winjab for ages until it stopped working
