Kallous has a great selection, and mixes it tight as. Boy needs more attention. (DnB)

Breaks - Not really a DISC jockey as such, but Blueprint really is taking off more and more with his sets. Nice and punchy, yet still being accessible. Seeing him at Fractured last week was the first time I heard him in full, and I really dug his sound. And anyone who has the balls to play one of those keyboard thingies that you blow into (name escapes me now...) has got to be quality!

Agree with Quick, Kallous is a wikked DJ, has an awesome selection and gets right into it. Why aint anyone else putting him on?

Also young Safire has learnt well from his older siblings, seriously he has the skillz, other wise he wouldn't of won one of four triple J/noise national bedroom dj's comps. Gets into his hip hop as well as drum n bass, check him at Spindry

yeah people really need to be booking Valuetime and Quick a whole lot more than they do.

to be honest. im getting rather tired of the same old local support at nights. or even the same old local dj's at local nights.

good thread.

Gotta say that Valuetime's mixes always hit the spot.

that's not having diversity mate.

diversity is having DJs play across the board. this pigeon-holed night thing is the root of the trouble with D&B for tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime.

D&B used to be all about pushing shit and using as many influences as you could!

:smt013 over. :)

I've been enjoying the no stars mixes. haven't heard him out though. ;)

for real. too many people (read everyone) play the same stuff.

in melbs its either liquidy or hard and heavy. and in between that its the anthems, no need for a set FULL of fucking anthems IMHO, old or new.

EDIT: this is all re: dnb DJ's in case you havent figured that yet. :P

i think the trick of it is to not care too much about playing the freshest tunes. guys like me are so far down the ladder in terms of getting bomb tracks that you sometimes only get to play tracks after they've been in the rinse for six months. but the emphasis on drumnbass (particularly when it's played out) has always been on being fresh and new, there's a ring of producers and djs who get new promos and dubs. (this is not a myopic gripe, because i obviously makes sense this way).

it makes it harder for up and coming djs to impress when djing is essentially about selection, and therefore, easier for the big name djs to stay big name.

personally, i prefer it when guys play tracks from two years ago in a mix, and i like doing it myself. mixing the same bomb tracks that have come out in the last few months in different orders every time i wanna play records makes me bored.

Taking notes on all this, good thread.

Quick - If u played a more diverse sound you would get booked more. Do me a liquid mix hehehehe :P Plus u have been playing for a fair while now and suppoted internationals.... 8)

VT - Yours is coming lounge stylee ;)

Kallous - Had a fair few sets now, havnt forgotten bout him.

Safire - Tim booked him and bro to play NEXT lounge gig.

Lee J- gets enuff sets for a lazy barstead :P

Lewy C - Kids 13 years old plays prog somthin (not dnb obvis.) and already getting gigs at G.O.D and hi fi bar...(now we just gotta convert him too DNB! ;) )

Keir - well i reckon hes off the "UPCOMING" List now ;)

Will - I've always like ur style and selection u need to hassle promoters more to get booked.

Gonna take all points of track selection on board too, everyone knows im an anthem basher ;) and yes i love it, but i'll play ANYTHING from bukem to Baron to Tek....IF I LIKE IT.

I'm all for letting ANYONE play on my KB show old or new dj's...just hit me up.

I think another prob is crews have to STOP booking the same old dj's in their crews.

Elementz have there own DJ's as do Agent Mad as do Sjooshi etc...just my 2cents. 8)

I've yet to actually see em play out, which is the real test, but Johnny Nostars and Valuetime have got good selection in their mixes. Valuetime in particular.

I'd agree wid a lot of the other calls, but I don't really consider dude's like Quick and Fickuss up and coming. They been playing out and about for a couple of years already.

Keir and Dust haven't been playing out for quite as long, but they're probably my two favourite DJs at the moment.

I know this threads more about up and comers.. but while we are on the dnb trip....three things i like to see 'more' at dnb gigs...

1) welcoming vibe..
2) fresh toones (i.e. don't always play 'safe' sets)
3) logical flow..

not saying this doesn't exist... just 3 important elements for me :D

I don't think Sjooshi and AM necessarily have their own DJs, as such, they just put on huge parties and only want the best DJs to play at 'em. That's fair enough as far I'm concerned. They got much money invested and don't wanna take a risk. Maybe that means things aren't as interesting as they could be, but that's their choice.

I also think it's fair enough that crews play their own parties. They could book more different dues, but don't deserve criticism for not. It's up to them.

More carrot, less stick please. :)

PS. Cheers for the props. :D Apparantly I'm playing down at e55 this Friday, so I guess it doesn't take took much hassling. :teef:

it's one thing to put on a party and say your money is invested in getting a return, but i also think promoters have a responsibility to keep punters interested with new names and investing in new local talent. otherwise as others have said we have the same supports at every gig and no one gets a lookin. it is NOT just about keeping punters happy, but also ensuring the scene is diverse and thriving.

Dude, the reason I play that style alot, is cos not many do, and are certainly not as diverse within the sub-genre. Like I said, I play what doesn't get play much or even at all, and they're still quality tunes. I have liquid in my bag, but it gets played heaps more.

^^^ Good on ya quick...play what u love dude !

I got so sick of buyin records that i wasnt really feelin but i knew my mates would dig.... they just end up at the back of the crate...

We all gotta remember that we all do this for a love of good music...

We (I) dont choose a life of poverty (no car, $100+ a week on records, equiptment, etc) just to be "hip" , "cool" , "seen" whateva!!
We do it for the music!!

I honestly dont mind if i play in the bedroom for the rest of my life....as long as i still get rushes when i hear that tune that make me smile !!!

ok...

Haven't been to any dnb gigs for awhile, but in terms of breaks (DJs & live/production), my top few would be (in no particular order):

Blueprint
Andy Page
Feigan
& Lynt

I'm hanging to see Blueprint live again - dude, please keep us/me posted of any more gigs =) I also really wanna see Andy Page with his bass guitar again and I'll shake it to Feigan and Lynt any night/morning ;)

I'll agree on those dudes playin Tek, but still, quite different sets come from each, every time. I won't just play the newest shit either. But I know what your sayin, and I do have quite a healthy little warm up seletion goin, I mean 12 creats, it can't all be hard...

some interesting things came up here.

I understand that AM slots are hard to come by, and fair enough for reasons already stated, at 33 parties it was the same support for a long time. But it can be broken. Lynt for example was an up and comer, then a minor leauges major, and now regularly books slots before, after and even inbetween internationals. wasnt always so.

I guess there are two differnet up and coming, that is coming out of the lounge room and into warm up slots. Which as Fents has demonstrated often takes a little compramise on the DJ's part, then there is moving from warm up dj into major slots and onto bigger parties.

One thing about melbourne DnB is that is has always been very crew orientated. (correct me if im wrong). These days since some of the big names of the 90's dropped out the parties are run by one crew or another, and you can pretty much guess by the promoter who is going to play at them. Generalisation i know.

I give props to Hahn big time to Lynt, why the hell does he not get booked?
THat kid that wont the vic champs last year plays from time to time with his crew at 55, cat has skills.
Dnb wise, i leave you heads to tell me, just not Nam.

Being as humble as I can sound....

I try my best to help DJs get what they deserve, but its hard to help others who don't help themselves first.

How many "up and comers" are out selling themselves week in week out? If you don't get gigs, make your own!

Good example from this Jungle book I'm reading..
All Crews - Journey into Drum and Bass Culture wrote: DJ Storm / Kemistry would take any gig they could get, even if it was 100 miles up the M1 just to get their name out, even if they didnt get paid.
