If you were dissapointed with Lateralus then I don't know what you like about TOOL. I thought that Lateralus was simply a natural progression in their style of musical perception, a step even further into the mysteries of TOOL land....Hardy wrote:Touring this year too.
Was disappointed with Lateralus, really hope this is good.
Haven't you seen the film clips? CHRIST! If this album is anything nearly as good as Lateralus I will be extremely grateful!
I thought it was like a cheap, rushed version of Aenima, which after waiting five years for pissed me off no end. Undertow and Aenima were so brilliant, but Lateralus was just so... ordinary.MissingInAction wrote:If you were dissapointed with Lateralus then I don't know what you like about TOOL. I cant get enough of the powerhouse that is Maynard. The new ones bound to be good, as we have a taste of what his songwriting is now like thorugh a perfect circle. A tool tour would be wicked, a mate has one of those huge tour posters from their most recent tour that he pulled from a brick wall in the city in his house
George likes spicy chicken
Tool European tour.

I'm with you Hardy, did not hit me hard enough at all. I can't put my finger on it though. At first it kinda sounded like a band that was exactly like tool, but a combination of the energy, songwriting, and some other factors all just fell slightly below the bar. If I had never heard Aenima before I problably would have thought it was fantastic, it's just that Aenima is so high up there for me, and the wait was so long, I was expecting so much.Hardy wrote:I thought it was like a cheap, rushed version of Aenima, which after waiting five years for pissed me off no end. Nailed it. It's not that it's a bad album, it just severly lacks something, something that made the others so fucking brilliant.flippo wrote:I'm with you Hardy, did not hit me hard enough at all. NEEDS MORE MESHUGGAH!!!Curly wrote:I think it has something to do with ticks & leaches - that track just does'nt work for me.
I've heard the new album has a heavier edge to it, possibly influenced by Messuggah touring with them.
Could be a good thing.
Yeah i'd say that would definitely be a positive influence.
*EDIT*
Fucking love that Tool pic in the first post!

I love all their albums.
Who's seen em live? That's what Tool is all about IMO.
me me me me me.....i seen em live
Maynard in hot pants, rockin out, fuckin wikkid tunes, awesome visuals, security guard lifting me up and putting me on a side barrier thingy cos i felt ill and then realising i had the best damn view of the whole thing... AWESOME stuff
Um I heard the single on Triple J was anyone thats got the album know what track it is?
Is the rest of the album like that?
I kinda hope not. Maybe the radio player we listened to it on was fucked but it sounded really generic (for toll I mean) like it didnt have any of the sonic passion the other albums had.
Maybe (hopefully) it was just that one tune.

Sorry to bear the bad news, but this album sounds exactly like every other Tool album. Yawn.ShiKung wrote:Um I heard the single on Triple J was anyone thats got the album know what track it is?

A sonic youth album?
Hip Hop?
unplugged?
Hahaha it's still dinosaur rock from the 70's.

Suprise, suprise...it sounds like a TOOL album!? Funny that.
Seriously, this album is a truly accomplished piece of work. If you didn't really get into Tool to begin with, guess what, it sounds like another Tool album.
(For those with a bit more of an ear than that, have a listen). In ten years time when the brilliance of this is recognised, don't come crying.
BTW - the first single is Vicarious, track one. My fucking god.

Somebody say "word" to me! I'm open-minded.
I've been into tool since Undertow, and my ears work fine thanks. It's just that you'd expect a little PROGRESSION after 13 years.panNik wrote:Suprise, suprise...it sounds like a TOOL album!? Funny that.

I found this album a million times more accessible than Lateralus. Their creativity (especially Jones' and Carey's) is mind boggling, but the song structures on this album are a lot tighter than those on the last.
However, tracks like Parabola on Lateralus, and the title track grew on me over time. Check the drumming on this....

no doubt if there was too much 'progression' there would have been more complaints about that right?
i'm yet to have a listen, but heard some of it in JB the other day. another one for the list.
Tool have always had a pretty unique and distict sound...but like nik said...it's looking beyond the superficiality to see the real creative genius of the band.

I guess my earlier response with out even hearing a single note or polyryhtmic drum beat was bang on the money - wank rock for rich kids
and BTW Hardy has pretty good taste - you deserve all you got there panNik

Call it professional interest FW, but what music do you enjoy listening to when you're not scathingly dismissing various other artists. Not trying to be sarcastic, just genuinely interested.
I would also recommend giving Nik the benefit of the doubt, as he too has a broad and well-rounded taste in music, much as I'm sure Hardy does.
(Let's not mention Shadow though )

giving it the first listen thru now.
liking it so far. yes it does sound like Tool. but thats Tool, they sound like that. Bands can sound similar after 30 years.
lateralus was deff a grower for me. Schizm, Parabola (how mad is that film clip!) are my favs.
Tool have always done it for me. got all the albums almost the day they came out.
go tool. are they touring again? they do a jolly good show
