the internet nanny

Post by Rob M »

this might not be considered music related, but google is not my friend today.

I'm basically after some know-how on how to curb pop-up (porn, random) banners, visits to unsavory (youtube, metacafe) content and random page openings to viral infected sites...

...mainly for the pc as my mums partner is clueless and just clicks anything flashy or impressive. I'm finding i just want to limit bandwidth use to rubbish content.

I wantt to do it deceptively as to not make myself look like a net nanny, but I also want to take some control on his net usage habits.

He's a 40 y.o. kid pretty much :)

Any feedback above and beyond 'user profile' settings under xp admin, nod32 and windows defender spyware would be great.

recommend me site blocking, child-proofing apps, hacks or workarounds. as long as they are freeware or geeky alternatives.

I'm clueless in security. If anyone can help I'll really appreciate it.

Lol I'd shank someone if they tried to do that to me. Especially my partners son.

hey thanks, hosts file did the trick.

Very simple and effective.

I came across a cool freeware app called Naomi 3.2 ... it basically kills the browser if certain porn/warez crap shows up.

Pretty good if you have kids, family using the PC. nice one.

you can also block sites pretty easily through most routers. You should also be able to do keywords as well but neither of which are perfect.

I came accross an article which contained the word "do****ent" (document). Hooray for word filtering.

I'm curious about this hosts file. Brief explanation?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file

you just edit a text file... pretty much resolve any address location to a specific IP.

To find another IP, just do a WHOIS lookup online.

Spybot S&D's IE controls should be enough. I'd never recommend touching the hosts file unless you absolutely have to. (control the resource access upstream in the router/proxy if needed.)
