How to start you're own clothing label!

Post by Lauer »

I'm thinking of creating my own clothing label, focusing on hoodies and t-shirts at first. I want to create good quality clothing and designs. I'm a good designer so designing will not be too much of a problem but what to do about getting stuff made up, i don't have much idea...

Anyone have any knowledge to share???

I can supply several different kinds/brands of t-shirts & hoodies (the best being Gildan & American Apparel) and also the custom woven labels to replace theirs

Can look after screen printing, plastisol transfers, flock, custom badging or embroidery

Custom made t-shirts are also possible

Small quantities are done here (and obviously are more expensive) and Large quantities are usually done in China

iv bought alot of stuff online thats looks good as a jpg but wears like a gif.

i have nothing to offer other than mild ranting threats sorry

Screen printing is fine for t-shirts but for hoodies i want full colour digital prints a la Bape for example.

What's plastisol transfers and flock BRB?

a plastisol transfer is what you have reffered to as a 'full colour digital print, a la Bape'

flock is the stuff that feels like felt or velvet

I can show ya samples of all the different printing methods if you're keen>?

I have had my own clothes label. Went as far to have my own patterns made up for hoodies because it is hard to get a good shape from stocks available.

You reach a point where you need to decide to start having the gear manafactured overseas because in reality it is not viable to have it done locally. Tough call to make.

Make sure you have a good business plan, cause throwing a couple of designs you have in your head onto a t shirt just aint going to cut it.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for the advice, i have taken that into consideration. I don't plan on this stuff selling for that cheap as i would like it to be more of a boutique thing. I might have to make up some patterns myself, i hear it is very expensive to get them down from dress maker. I have been told it's as simple as taking apart a hoodie myself and tracing them onto tracing paper. Will have look into it.

I could imagine it would be if you're in it to make huge amounts of money, people have told me that its really really hard to get into the popular clothing scene however i don't really like that stuff and i'm not really into it. I'm making this stuff because i find it hard to find clothes i like in Australia and i'm aiming more at the breaks, dnb and hip hop crowd and is something i'm doing on the side more than anything.

Lauer, i think you really should do some proper research, and as Dboy said get a business plan. It seems to me from what youve posted youve got the idea that

1. photoshop some designs
2. get them printed
3. <scene missing>
4. profit!!

truth is. 4. Profit wont happen for a long time till after you start.

I have two diff mates that have both started their own lines.
www.wifez.com and AER, both guys have worked their arses off to even get the first line out (AER currently on their 3rd)
you need to be sharp, have a good business sense and promote the hell out of yourselves.

you say you want to provide mainly to breaks, dnb and hiphop, thats a pretty niche market wouldnt you agree?
Anyone remember BURN crew? they used to be a LOT more prominate than they currently are (my most humble opinion).

end of the day, work hard, dont believe it will be a free ride as the market is allready over-saturated with a HEAP of shit that people will buy!

How did it come across that I think it will lead to instant profit NHD???

I am aware that it will take many years before i start making any money out of this (i'm not that stupid) and i'm aware that it won't be easy even at niche level, although it will be easier than the pop market.

Apart of my research is asking people on this site, and a few people i know in the industry albeit totally different target market as well scrawling the internet.

And yeah that's the market i want to direct it to, for me its more a matter of making clothes i like, and hopefully other people like. It's not a huge amount about profit at the moment at all but i do realise that it will take A LOT of effort and time and it might seem like for nothing for the first few years!

also by on the side i meant as well as working, not whenever i get a spare half our every so often.

wiser words never said. apparel is only ever going to be profitable for the kind of garments mentioned when volumes of turnover is high. make sure that you can keep the business financially afloat for at least 4 seasons before you start.

but if you're doing it for a love of the process and end product, go for it! keep it original and personal, you'll have fun alog the way.

there are many reasons for the slip in prominence, though.

great local product with a lot of attention to detail.

AER boys shit is dope.

But too true, just being able to score american apparels for $11 and getting em printed up aint even half the job. Finding stores to stock that niche market without saturating is a hard thing to negotiate.

That said, I don't wanna sound negative. Everyone should follow their aspirations or risk never knowing.

best thing to do from what i can gather from friends who have started their own labels and also friends who are fashion designers, is to get your concept down, take it to a fashion designer to get a pattern made up, then go to mail order bride and get some workers for a sweatshop, make the little bastards work 16 hours or you burn their feet...
Id love to be in fashion
