'The thing I love best about this camera is that it is lightning fast and therefore awesome for sports photography.'
heh. the only difference between it and the 300/350/400d is that its max shutter speed is 1/8000, not 1/4000, and you need some pretty serious glass to be doing that anyway.

So foo... what you reckon out of the choices? I bet you're going to say 400D. If so, what lens? Should I just get the body and a 50mm f1.4 for cheap? Fuck man, sooo many choices, I know phat fuck-all too so it makes it harder coz I don't really know what I need.
I'm mainly interested in.....
club shots,
city night shots
landscapes and architecture.
what would be the best all 'round lens for this style?

i have and love my 400d. i can recommend it, but honestly don't know what to say about it vs the nikon.
50mm f1.4 will be great for club stuff, but a right royal pain in the arse for general stuff, because it's got such a long focal length (effective length around 80mm due to the cropped sensor). nikon do a 30mm f1.4 which is a pretty damn nice all-round lens (and fast), but it's about three times the price of canon's 50mm f1.8; probably about the same as the 50mm f1.4.
for city stuff, you might want to look at the wider lenses, e.g. the canon 10-22 (or sigma 10-20). they're absolutely brilliant, and cram a lot of stuff in, plus you can use the effects to your advantage:

(e.g. the metro sign isn't really far off the ground at all.)
in general, canon seem to have better and cheaper lenses, but honestly, the nikon 30mm f1.4 is pretty friggin' compelling.

A friend of mine gave me an old Canon with a lense that's like a foot long The front lense glass is cracked tho and needs a replacement before I can have a play. Does anyone know where this sort of thing can be repaired??
Only the meek get pinched...the bold survive
be warned -- it's going to cost you an absolute shitload. in fact, somewhere up to 1.7 metric shitloads.mixtress wrote:A friend of mine gave me an old Canon with a lense that's like a foot long The front lense glass is cracked tho and needs a replacement before I can have a play. I'll check out Lellow Pages and see where I'm at before I start daydreaming about photo fieldtrips

the lenses are all interchangeable, so it's probably worth taking it down to your nearest knowledgable camera shop, and having a chat about your options. in the end, you're probably better grabbing a new lens, particularly as the huge telephoto ones are incredibly tough without tripods anyway (and farken heavy!).mixtress wrote:That's quite a shitloadfooishbar wrote:be warned -- it's going to cost you an absolute shitload. in fact, somewhere up to 1.7 metric shitloads.mixtress wrote:A friend of mine gave me an old Canon with a lense that's like a foot long The front lense glass is cracked tho and needs a replacement before I can have a play. should be here in the next day or so
can't wait
With the aussie dollar so strong camera gear on ebay has gotten cheaper. $850 for a brand new 400D incl kit lens you can't go wrong mate. They both do the same thing, 8mp and 10mp mean jack shit unless you plan on printing massive size prints. I have had both cameras and prefer the 400D only because the layout is a bit better i.e. one big screen rather than the two. Also the sensor cleaner is a handy feature.
There is a seller on ebay called DigitalRev they are o/s but I have heard a lot of good feedback about their reputation on ebay. Worth checking out

Got the 16-35mm and I can assure you it's nothing but glass from the heavens. My best investment.BammBamm wrote:Whats on everyones wish list?
I want a canon 16-35mm f/2.8, a canon 70-200mm f/2.8, a set of pocket wizards. Not being greedy or anything :p
I'm also after the 70-200mm f/2.8. Sex. 10-22mm would be nice too. Ooh. So much I want!
Here's the camera my friend gave me. You can see the broken filter (at least I'm hoping it's only the filter) plus the bent casing (middle left of screen).
There's also a broke connector that won't allow the lense to click into place in the camera housing. Fingers crossed it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to fix.
Anyone used one of these before...know anything about it?

hmm. surely for that price, you should be able to get close to a 400d (digital rebel xti)? worth it for the 9-point af alone, imo.
also, bugger shitty tripods they throw in. you need a gorillapod slr.
sweet! That looks the goods.
depends on who ships it. some will pay for you and invoice, but most will just hold it. either way, you only find out when it hits australia, but you can get a ballpark idea beforehand.Stray wrote:How can I find out how much an item will be taxed and how do you actually go about paying it?
Do you just receive a bill when the item arrives or must it be organised before hand?
