Side chaining and multiband compression.
Side chaining and multiband compression.
These are couple of the biggest buzzword terms in production these days, but what are they and how do you use them?
I sifted through a bunch of tutorials and put together some of the best ones on the most popular platforms Cubase, Reason, Nuendo, & Logic, and posted them on my blog hope this info is useful to you guys...

Re: Side chaining and multiband compression.
Its all about this little sidechain emulator called Sidekick which is a free VST and simulates the routing of a conventional sidechain without all the bullshit that you have to go through in Cubase to acheive one.
I generally sidechain the kick to the bass and then maybe to strings, or pads to create a rhythmical gated effect. It depends really but handy in the form of that VST.

Re: Side chaining and multiband compression.
apart from the mixing improvements sidechaining can do, you could do other interesting things like sidechain eg a filter on a pad with a snare or something... I haven't actually mucked about with it much though. I have tried to sidechain a ride cymbal with a kick but I couldn't get it to sound as seamless as I would have liked

I go to the Twisted Lemon homepage and it's not a free plugin. v4 costs 15 euro.
Re: Side chaining and multiband compression.
You've confused me already?
I thought it was meant to be failry intuitive... or is this just v4?
I guess so.

You are a gent
Re: Side chaining and multiband compression.
The built-in compressor in Live 7 has a brilliant sidechaining function. You just place the compressor as normal (eg. on your pad or bass track), then switch on the sidechaining. A little extra box comes up where you choose the 'input' channel (eg. kick), and you can tweak the attack, delay etc.
Been wanting to use sidechaining for years but it was too much fiddling around in my previous DAW's. That VST suggested here sounds good though.

Re: Side chaining and multiband compression.
As an effect, sidechaining is cool. Psy-trance basses, sweeping pads etc.
But this whole thing about ducking the bass to get your kick louder is really overused. If you know how to EQ properly, side-chaining is not necessary.

Re: Side chaining and multiband compression.
Even envelope filters and EQ can make your kick drums punch slightly before a bass hit, so the overall sound affords you the sound of the drum and the bass wave when they are triggered at the same time.

100% agree. Not overused so much as misunderstood and unneccessary.Lephrenic wrote:As an effect, sidechaining is cool. Psy-trance basses, sweeping pads etc.

Much better employed on the bass purely to get it pumping, snares, pads and vocals tbh.

I agree sometimes I like to stack my basses and kick drums to get the full force.
