I'm no an expert either.

In my experience it works like this (there are variations with the same endcost ie: you buy the item rather than your work. I work in a tech company though, so not much point in this):
  • Your work buys your phone for you.
  • They deduct the pre-gst cost from your salary before tax either as one lump sum or over several weeks / months (I don't think you can deduct more than 50% of a pay at once). So you are not taxed on this amount (which would normally be about 30%)
  • Your work does some sort of claim to the tax department. Not sure how this bit works. Would like to, anyone?
You can do one PDA OR Laptop per year.

You end up saving GST plus a percentage based on how much you are taxed.

So an iPhone 3GS 16GB would be $879.00 in the shop.

Salary Sacrifice you get it for pre GST of $799 - $239.70 (as you don't pay 30% income tax on this money as per usual).

So you get it for $559.

Can anyone comment on this? Is this right? HELLO NIC????

it's where your boss buys you the thing and takes it out of you pay BEFORE tax... so you don't pay tax on the amount and you usually get better deals on the equipment. Most companies offer it through an extenal service like this one... http://www.smartsalary.com.au/

nah, don't bother about salary sacrifice if you aren't on a salary... just get the $79 business cap and stop being a pussy... you spend that much (or more) on your mobile each month anyways.

but i AM a pussy dan! :P

i currently spend $50 monthly or every 3 weeks or so.

the $59 cap with optus means $9 per month for handset and $14 for insurance.
thats $85 per month with no internet tethering. then kev said i should pay $99 and get everything inclusive.
BUT this is twice what i currently spend, and no salary means i am earning fuck all atm.

checked into 3, they were VERY unhelpful. it costs $200 for them to unlock, optus is free.
3 seems like a cheaper deal, $5 for handset and $49 per month, but only 250mb so upgrade to optus' 750mb means it ends up being
$49 + 5 + 6 = $60 + insurance. cant find anything on 3's insurance costs. I kind of think 3 sucks. Not sure why.

do you guys have yours insured?

i'm with optus, and mine tethers just fine ...

i have insurance, currently on the non-cap $79 plan (due to international rates being the same as domestic rates) + insurance + upgrade to 2gb data. $0 handset repayments even with a 12mo contract and a 16gb phone (got last year).

they can restrict it on the phone, but if you're using beta releases of the OS, you can upload your own carrier definition file. :)

yes, but you have to pay $10 a month to be 'allowed' to tether or summat?

and the 3gs ARE coming in, but optus literally get 15 a week in the CBD and they are first in best dressed.
the 3gs, you cant get $0 handset unless your on a huge plan.

I got $0 on $79

do the math...

over one year....

52/3 = 17.333 x $50 = $866.67

$79 x 12 = $948

$948 - $866.67 = $81.33

that's pretty cheap for a new phone... PLUS you'll get heaps more calls etc, better rates and the rest... PLUS you'll get MEGA SATISFACTION EVERY DAY

Kitty I suggest you get an iPhone on virgin. They run on the optus network so coverage is identical and tethering is completely free, and you get better included calls/sms and data allowance. Trying to make people pay $10/month for something that free and doesn't cost them any money to support, pfft optus can bang it.

putting it simply (without all the tech jargon I don't understand)

Before: Optus. Nokia N70. $79 Cap, $600 worth of calls & text

After: Optus. iPhone. $79 Cap, $600 worth of calls & text PLUS 800Mb of intermawebs (that I've never come close to using)
I think I am, Therefore I am. I think

I dropped my iPhone flat on the screen on to concrete and managed to shatter the screen... Was so pissed off because apple don't have anything in place to get it repaired you just have to deal with it or buy a new iphone. It still worked fine but I decided to order the glass online and repair it myself. Back to like new now, although I really should get some kind of case or skin to prevent it happening again...

This is true. However, since being taken over by Optus I haven't noticed any change in Virgin. It would appear they run Virgin independent of Optus (when I worked for Optus we had nothing to do with Virgin) Hence you can tether iPhone on virgin for free for example.

Made an appointment with the Geniusbar at Apple Doncaster tomorrow to fix my phone. Fingers crossed for a replacement - the screen is fucked. Not cracked, but parts of it have lost sensitivity meaning I can't type, or access texts, or see who I've missed a call from and left ALL of Lady Gaga's 'Lovegame' on my voicemail.
