N3W GROUNDS Presents: MAMPI SWIFT(UK) and IC3(UK)

Thursday 13th May

Mercat Basement. 456 Queen St CBD

7pm-3am

Doorsales:$15 before 10pm $20 thereafter

First 50 people to email [email protected] saying Mampi Swift & IC3 with your first and last name will be on a $15 industrie doorlist.

Mampi Swift:Once known solely as DJ Swift, the addition of "Mampi" to this DJ’s name is far from meaningless; a term meaning "big, strong and quick" depicts everything about him from his pure physique to his amazing "double-dropping" DJing skills. A major player on the circuit for the majority of the scene’s existence, his sheer presence behind the decks remains unmatched by all contenders, a powerhouse whose stature is reflected in the consistently high-octane selection he brings to the dancefloor.

It was in 1990 that Mampi Swift starting DJing and found himself behind the counter of the Lucky Spin record store, sadly now defunct. With access to the studio next door and in-house engineer Pete Parsons (AKA Voyager) at the controls, Swift jumped at the valuable opportunity to learn new skills. 1992 saw the start of an eight year residency on Kool FM, while at the same time he found regular work DJing at events such as One Nation and Fabric. He released tunes on other labels such as True Playaz, Frontline, Suburban Base, SOUR & K Power, before setting up his own label Charge Recordings. The label kicked things off with initial release ‘Twisted’ followed by ‘Feel Good’ in 1997; both tracks were massive hits in the UK and rapidly spread worldwide. While enjoying the success of his first two tracks, nothing could have prepared the man for the tremors his third would create throughout clubland; ‘The One’ dropped in the winter of 97, finally earning him the worldwide fame he deserved in a track still enjoying constant rotation in the record boxes of most by the present day.

Despite his success Mampi Swift has not lost touch with the music. Swift describes his style as ‘plain rolling’ and while the catchy beats are a key element to his overall sound, it’s the unique distorted basslines that people notice… Adjectives like ‘nasty’, ‘dirty’, ‘raw’, ‘twisted’ and even ‘gut rumbling’ have been used to describe his tracks in reviews throughout the Drum & Bass journalists’ fraternity. Needless to say, when Swift gets in the studio he finds it hard to get a vibe from just a straight 808 bassline... His productions are dark with plenty of energy and power to rock a dance floor. 2001 saw the release of his EP ‘Resurrection’, featuring the dance floor destroying anthem ‘Trippin’. The tunes contained therein made such an impact during their time on dubplate that they left clubbers’ mouths watering for the release. His second EP, ‘Feedback’ and debut album ‘Mainframe’ pushed the label to its 25th release by May 2004. Charge Recordings has, and will remain to be an established and consistent contender for accolades while the big man pulling the strings continues to tear up dancefloors in trademark style.

IC3:One of the scene's biggest characters, this hugely popular and versatile MC is equally respected and admired for his countless residencies around the world at a wide spectrum of nights. Best witnessed alongside his good friend and partner in crime Mampi Swift, the 'awesome twosome' are famed for guaranteeing a high energy dancefloor extravaganza. IC3's musical influences stretch right across the genres from Old-Skool Hip-Hop (Big Daddy Kane, N.W.A) to 80's pop (Duran Duran); rapping from the age of eight, he quickly became known on the block as 'the little kid that can rap'. His journey to the top of his field began in and around 1994; based in West London he built his reputation through his use of the airwaves, most notably the infamous pirate Transition 1 on which he built a huge fan base. Soon enough the phone was ringing with bookings and IC3 was performing at the likes of seminal raves Roast, Jungle Fever, Desert Storm and A.W.O.L.

For more than a decade since, IC3 has been working regularly alongside a whole variety of top DJs across London, Europe and beyond, securing residencies at a whole host of well respected club nights and raves including the likes of Movement @ Bar Rumba, Ram Records @ The End, Slammin' Vinyl and One Nation to name but a few. It quickly becomes clear when watching IC3 perform that there is something truly special about his performance style, a key reason being his status a qualified actor having studied Theatre at both Drama College and university. Despite having less and less time to act since the turn of the millennium, many of his formative years were spent in a number of stage productions and in 2005 his passion for acting could no longer be ignored, resulting in appearances in a number of movies and even time spent putting finishing touches to his own production ‘The IC3 Show’ which is destined for global distribution on DVD before the end of the year. Always a compliment to the music, IC3 is a true showman.
