I'm going to give up my day job soon. I would rather be broke and doing what I want than comfy and bored to tears.

Re: Gripe thread
my mate Amadu went out with Billie Piper for about 4 years.
They bought a house together and everything. She's also a massive pot head.
Anyway she started rehearsing for a play and ran off with a co-star in it without even telling my mate she was leaving him.
What a cold hearted bitch.

To all the choose lifers:
The problem is, my job is pretty much me getting paid to do what I want to do. If you want an analogy, it's like YI going pro (good luck, btw). Except, what do you do when fulfilling your creative/professional/academic dreams will fuck you over in other, more mundane aspects of your life? If you got to follow your dreams and be a pro producer/artist/lion tamer, but discovered it was at the cost of a functional social life, which would you choose? I have always rationalised this with it 'being temporary', but the worry is: will I become a person I despise before the light at the end of the tunnel arrives?
The job is still what it was meant to be and what I want to be doing, but I can't help but feel there should be a point at which you draw a line because it is demolishing you too much as an actual person.

dunno its tough when you are so specialised, you win the mega niche job game tbh.
\pity the australian academic system is so shit in asutralia compared to the US funding wise. Are there not job openings at universities closer to normal places like newyawk, SF or MANCHESTER? probably massively competitive? if i were you i would smoke a blunt and gurgle some box wine for short term lols.

Dan, I ain't that young! The problem with taking a break is that in mathematics, once you leave, you basically can't come back. If I think I will ever want to be in this line of work, I've gotta stick this out now. No chance in flying fuck land that anyone would hire me if I'd been out of research for anything more than a year (even then, in this job market, I doubt even a year is viable.)
nic, last year, I pretty much applied for any remotely plausible job anywhere in the world and will do so again this year. The market is fuck-off over-saturated and aneurism-inducingly random. Not a lot more I can do. On the plus side, mebbe the random will end up in my favour one day
Aaaaanyway, thanks for the kind words kids . Something will happen...

Yo Retzie,
I feel ya pain. I had the good fortune to land a dream job as a sound engineer.
The problem with being paid to do what yuou love is that you start to resent it.
Music is now a hobby again and I'm enjoying it so much more.

Agree babe. Honestly, I have had to compromise lots of my life to follow the dream etc, but each day things happen that remind me that its all worth it....my social life is mostly dictated by work now, but on the other end if things, while some of you guys cant go out due to work stuff, I HAVE to go out when I really dont want to sometimes.retzie wrote:To all the choose lifers:

If you love math but not what your doing, I think its about trying to find an application for your love that inspires you rather than destroys you....
it must be tricky, I have no idea what it would be like to be a mathematician.

Decreased funding for tertiary education and a sh1thouse emphasis on industry-based learnings rather than research and subjects that lead to true innovation have both fuqed over what was once a noble profession. I'm not saying that post-doc/researcher/lecturer isn't noble now... it's just that the hallowed halls of campus are filled with people who are stabbing each other in the back for tenure.
At the end of the day only you can make a decision... and while it may seem insurmountable now, you will make the right choice. Keep exploring, keep thinking, listen to your heart, and trust it. You will know what to do

It's over and done with now, electricity and gas and phone and internets all sorted for new house...
Seriously feel like crying though, gas and elec so confusing, phne easy done, telstra budget line 21 per month SIMPLE that was the only good phone call of the day.
internode was just down right rude to me on the phone so i told him to forget it i dont care.
iinet almost on par with internode with FRIENDLY FUCKING STAFF!!!
TPG was very patient and udnerstood i was frustrated and the reason he couldn't here me every couple of min was cause i was walking through the house with music fucking cranked.
Utilities companies can kiss my overly fat arse (theres another unrealated gripe i've put on freaking weight!!!) ended up going with tru because they understood the "get straight to the point just facts straight facts very quick facts"
to top it off, i'm starting to freak out over moving a 3 foot fish tank with my babies in it. have barely started packing and already 11boxes done just on discs cd's dvd's wii games and play station games. I should be doing something other than drinking beer and being angry....
So help me if someone suggests packing up my stereo system before saturday 8pm I'm gonna kill em.

Out of interest, have you been going back to the same dentist every time? Think I mentioned it on here once before but my longtime family dentist was adamant that my wisdoms COULD NOT be taken out under local, and that I'd need to pay big bucks for hospital bed/anaesthetist/procedure etc etc.......Went to another bloke and he pulled them out in the chair for a fraction of the price
