So which DJ has taken you on a musical "Journey"?

Who was it and explain it all...

For me it's gotta be Danny McMillan's InFlight Entertainment CD. Yeah it's a CD, but it's put together so well, especially under the right influences you seem to go around the world and back.

I'm more interested in live Dj's though....

the coffee has got to him, as i read your posts I can even feel your heatbeat racing Lynt....

CD wise: For the Love of the Beat: Icey. The fact that he remixed specially for the CD says enough, the method of journeyness is unmatched in my collection, covers all breaks basses from the 2004 period. It is the way a mix CD should be.

Live:

Freestlyers NYE '99 party journey, the set basically explained to me the differences between old skool hip hop, big beat, funky breaks and the then emerging nu breaks sounds.

Derrik May: Public Office- you had to be there, it was magic.

Aphrodite: Stylewars @ the Fun Factory '98: diss him all you want, it was probably the first time i stood and listened to an entire 2 hour set with out leaving a spot- must have been 97 or 98? He was in his prime, and you can't deny his skills. ok musically it was not a journey like you may anticipate to find in this thread, but for me, i understood for the first time y drum and bass was popular.

Krush: Both times I have seen him, that is the definition of a DJ journey, the subtleness of it, the planning, the layering. nough said.

Shadow: Beyond the music.

Ransom: on more than one occasion, with no one else paying any attention, at the Late Show, sometimes over the period of 4 hours.

too many others to mention, but these are 1st to mind.

my question to you captain Lyntos::::

why is this "Journey aspect" only applicable to internatty's and CD's

do locals not have the balls / crowds not have the appreciation.?

Journey to me is the ablity to go beyond just being 'entertaining' and give you goosebumps, make you sad, scared, question your own life (like shadows dvd did, fuck me if I wasn't misty in some parts......"you have not betrayed your ideals....your ideals betray you.......what you gonna do....your eyes will not close....your tongue barely speaks, but I can still feel you............)

so yeah, a dj who doesn't want to just see smiley faces and hands in the air but heads down, head in hands, people turning to each other and going "what the fuck is going on...."

Like the mouth opened gaze in amazement in a vein attempt to know where you are or what is going on around you.... like what would happen when the teacher asked you how to solve an algebra problem....

okay, I am biased because I'm not a regular melbourne clubber, but that will change since my missus is in melbourne...

what I'm referring to (and I'm sure you'll agree) is with most dj's apprehension to go beyond "crowd pleasing" to "head fucking in a good way...."

like an internatty will come and have the ego (and expectation) to go "fuck it, I can play whatever I want...."

know what I mean

SWM, this is a journey for ya, I wrote this after seeing Krush earlier this year. Rooted to the spot for 1 1/2 hours, time stood still and I was the only one in the room...

In the words of Red from Shawshank Redemption, hope is a dangerous thing. I had spent a jittery first week back at work hoping to end it with an aural enema courtesy of the floating soundscapes and technical wizadry of DJ Krush at Prince of Wales.

Anticipation peaked as I waited for my crew to arrive, the kind of anticipation you feel when on the verge of being a part of something that will be talked about in hushed tones of reverance amongst the chosen few.

Getting to the Prince in time to catch the end of Music vs Physics and the practised precision of DJ Ransom, the Prince bandroom filled to capacity as eager punters swarmed the floor in wide-eyed readiness for the musical mayhem that was soon to be unleashed.

I eased my way through the crowd as Krush made his way to the decks to the rabid applause from his hungry acolytes. Krush eased into his sonic sermon with some trademark jittery drum patterns and textured rhythms, and by the time the first refrains of "Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt" by DJ Shadow oozed through the speakers, the tension and energy in the air was truly palpable.

Krush continued to build his masterpiece as the bassline slithered into darker and nastier configurations, whilst simultaneously the melodies and refrains rose to complex and subtle heights. It was the aural equivalent of going twelve rounds with Mike Tyson, only to find Angelina Jolie in your corner at the end of each round with a knowing smile and soothing words to ease your pain.

Krush worked his rig with the sheer precision and confident assurance of a micro surgeon, yet still managing to maintain that subtle air of experimentation and spontaneity that inspired moments of awe and inspiration.

It was all but impossible not to be drawn toward the front of the stage, as my fellow punters and I were inexorably tugged by the electronic voodoo concocted by Krush. As the set drew to a close, Krush upped the ante with some amazingly dexterous scratching and beat juggling as he utilised both his sampler and effects to draw to a triumphant close his bone jarringly beautiful hip hopera.

The night finished in a haze of goodbyes as hundreds of smiling faces were seen descending the stairs of the Prince, comments of awe and amazement echoing off the walls.

Green Nuns Of The Revolution @ Storey Hall. Can't remember when it was, prolly 1999. Utter madness, but so much more.

Gus Till @ some fucking tiny bush party years ago. And I mean tiny. Maybe 50 people. It was in the middle of nowhere, and it ruled.

Comparing Krush to most local DJ's is like comparing Kraft Singles to Triple Smoked Margaret River Bree...

In saying that though, I wholeheartedly agree with Lynt and Dboy that dudes like Ransom are already in that league, as are many others!

word.

And i gots to say, in my experience it has been DJ's like Derrick May who have brought the journey aspect to the live show. It is something that until recently i feel was severly lacking from much of the breaks scene. I can understand the obsession of technoheads who dig the detriot DJ's becuase so often it is the journey. DJ Spinna is a great example, to a passer by, some of his more tribal detroit mixes may sound same same and hallow, but i would never listen to his stuff one bit at a time, for him and many from that skool it is all about the journey, not always the case in breaks.

Don't get me wrong, it can be done, Icey for me has it down, Revolution has it down on a more hip hop tip, the ambiet instumental hip hop DJ's know where it is at, not just Krush, but in that vein.

As far as the locals go, Ransom- werd, Cromack has been known to journey a few customers, and dont take the wrong impression but back on Kiss and still to this day Brewster can bring it, i have been in a weird world with him on occassion, remember he did start out playing side rooms at raves with some broken beat bizzarness, that is where im talking about.

There is a difference between journeys that move you and touch your soul and those that joolt you through the awe of skill. One reaches deep and is often about the subtleness, others open eyes and leave you wondering.

word. I lost this CD on a road trip, kills me every time. Love the "you wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world" drop and bringing bill, ben and baggio in is spot on perfect. I miss this CD muchly.

Also love Brothers Gonna Work It Out, points just for working their artist name, the album name and the opening sample in so well.
