40 Years of Funk @ First Floor

393 Brunswick St, Fitzroy

29 November 2007
10pm – 3am

The DJs:
Chris Gill
Obliveus
Mr Lob
Brain

Cold Sweat is a song that came out in 1967, performed by James Brown and written by his bandleader Alfred ‘Pee Wee’ Ellis. It was recognised as a radical departure from conventional songwriting at the time of its release where an overwhelming emphasis is put on the first beat of each measure ("on the one") - it is sometimes cited as the first true funk song.

To celebrate 40 years of funkateers pumping out intense grooves First Floor is having a big night of funkalicious tunes, paying homage to both the funk originators and the new kids on the funk block. Four DJs will be playing funk music from the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties and naughties for your listening and dancing pleasure.

Some of the key funk players you’re likely to here are: James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, The Meters, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Isley Brothers, Parliament, Funkadelic, The Commodores, Kool and the Gang, Isaac Hayes, Prince, Rick James, Afrika Bambaataa, Cameo, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Living Colour, Fort Knox Five, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.

this is gonna be my favourite party this year I just know it's gonna be huge.

why you may ask, well cause I know I'm gonna hear every song that I love, it is the music that started most of the major streams of music that we all love, such as hip hop, drum and bass and breaks and shit what a lineup

Yeah, but I had those man boob implants removed after 1 of them ruptured & sprayed an entire dancefloor of unsuspecting souls with a silicon based glo-stick ooze...

If that's the story you want to sell, then by all means sell it. But we all know where the "ooze" really came from.

Just warning people that the funk band that was supposed to be playing pulled out yesterday so don't come along expecting a band - now you're stuck with those weirdo djs.

Free is my favourite price

This will be most fun, a journey through 40 years of funk from a great line up of dj's, choice venue and location and easy on the hip pocket :) :moremoneyforbeer:

Who's going to replace the funk band :?:

As if...my ego is twice that of any band, even one with such a cool basketball reference. I can play some marraccas, too.

Well, from being quite empty early on, there was a good crowd there when I left Lob rockin the 70's in the absence of Brain Drain. Peeps were feelin the vibe.
