Massive, massive sound restrictions.Friday wrote:thanks jbs
it's not all about 33 by the way
what sound restrictions do they have there drew?
No higher that 100 decibels, and in tech terms, that's just above working level in a sound studio.
That's the reason why we took Gimme to Brown Alley.
The residents have been complaining too, so my guess is the place hasn't got long to go.
Was in there (briefly) on Sat night, and it was possibly the worst sound I've ever heard in a club.
Shame, because we all used to love that place.
It's closing in a year or so anyway, apparently the whole block is being turned into a shopping mall or something.

My thoughts exactly.valuetime wrote:i thought there was a massive objection to the smith st development. terrible idea regardless...
whus with fuckers moving close to the action and complaining about the sound?
if you can't stand the heat... fuck off!
It's the same story throughout Fitzroy and the CBD.
So many wankers moving into club areas, and then complaining about the racket.
The Brunswick St festival, and numerous other clubs have shit themselves for this very reason.
No, Republika is going. That's what I've heard.
And from the lack of punters on Sat night - very soon I'd say.

Apparently in the houses in the street behind the club.
Better leave them alone.
Apparently it's one more complaint and it's goodbye Republika.
Imagine all the residents fucked off, and all the clubs in Fitzroy were open until 7am?
What a thriving, awesome, funky place it would be.
Damn those home-maker cunts!!

Though I think the reason Brunswick St Festival shut-down was due to insurance hikes… fuckers.
nah, coz most places can be bought and redeveloped for mo money, probably something to do with rates.quiet roar wrote:Does anyone know why councils give a shit when residents in new developments kick up a stink?
You'd figure it would be in their interest to keep the vibe these places have
old = new = higher rates?!?!?!
i dont know what im talking about

Know what you mean...lynt wrote:the worst thing is,
the council is run by people who agree with the home owners as they can relate. i know that sounds a bit general, but being close to someone who has gone through this shit you do hear a lot of what goes on.
we need youth on the council boards. not old dudes.
Problem: ratio of residential pepes voting for the councilors far out-weighs those who run the venues.
But, what can I say, I moved in to my place in North Melbs about 13/14 years ago and the pub on the corner(the Brittish) had stripping and topless barmaids, which we helped end... now the pubs been turned into some swanky apartments...
Its all well and good as long as its not you dealing with the disgusting drunks taking a piss on your car and keeping you up every night...
The last time me and Decksi played at Republika (about a month ago) there was a council appointed sound engineer making sure we didn't let the levels get passed red. The compressors kicked in so fast (dropping the bass to almost zero, leaving you with tinny highs that hurt your ears) it just wasn't worth the effort. Considering there was one (I repeat, ONE) JBL working in the back of the room and just a few in the front, you'd think his job would be defunct. Screw you and your high tech notebook computer Mr Mofo. It was so bad, you could whisper your order to the bartender and be sure he got it right!!!
Apparently it's just one resident that does the complaining. Been there for 30 years or so and hates the youthful pounding of basslines. I've fantasised about finding him and turning off his life support...

we'll be sure to give the sounds limits a good bashing tonight and really piss the old resident off then, any council dudes will be found bound and gagged in the corner with free feathers available for anyone who feels like tickling them to death.
Last saturday may have been quiet evil, but this friday promises to be a packed out pumping night. We're here to ensure that Republika rocks right up till it's last breath.
Come check it for yourselves, Brainstorm session #4 tonight, see other thread.

Free to those that can afford it, very expensive to those that can't.

didnt they try and crush Espy ?
you can still do gigs there and have bloody good sound (no one can say anything bad about the outdoor sound at 33&1/3 NYD05)
You just have to be ready to cop the $10,000 fine
yep, everyuthing Evil has said is unfortunately true
I know somebody who has very good info, in the area and apparently it'll be roughly 3 years, and then yes the proposed development will be going ahead. Its already been approved!
Another venue i played at once or twice just down from tehre called Electric Avenue closed due to a very difficult neighbour above, which has got me fuct because the tools at Pure and one-o-one blast thier sound right across the street - really spoiling for anyone else in the area, and attracting the cops every goddamn sat / fri night.
Theres another rumour for ya - apparently Pure arent that far from closure and one-o-one has had that many compliants and fines they shouldnt even still be open!!! that is a mystery to anyone who lives on Smith st.
My bedroom windwo looks out onto smith st. and i love it - even early sunday morning when sound from the club 100 meteres up the road bounces down and thru my 2MM think window - i still love it
if only people like me were allowed to live around these areas it would just Rock!

Same deal Luko. I live next to Public Office and hear nuthin' but doof till sunrise every weekend, but the way I see it is we moved there and we should just shut the fuck up and learn to live with it. Not try and change our pre-existing neighbours to suit us.LuKo wrote: My bedroom windwo looks out onto smith st. and i love it - even early sunday morning when sound from the club 100 meteres up the road bounces down and thru my 2MM think window - i still love it

Does that mean to people complaining about Republika who've been there for 30 years (supposedly) have got grounds 'cos they were there first?Guyno wrote:Same deal Luko. Personally I'd move to an area *because* of its nightlife not in spite of it...

A good mate of mine was trying to organise a very large event @ republika over two years ago now.... His proposal was knocked back for this very reason. (probably had a bit to do with the cost too ) The proposal was mainly focused on gaining a reputation for quality events that wwere widely promoted and with some very high profile DJs. The owner was claiming that it would be closing very soon and that he didn't want to invest any sort of effort/money into something when the place was gunna close. That was over two years ago now. We had the impression that he meant within the next 6-12 months. Obviously it's still open so, hey. I reckon there's a long time before anything is really going to happen in the regard.
just read the melbourne times in some restaurant last night, was going on about the licenses in fitzroy and how bad the "party goers" are.
photos of people drunk, bottles in the street, pictures of some well known venues looking very seedy.
even the fucking papers are bagging "us" by using incriminating photos.
some old home maker is gonna be reading that and then getting her coat to fight the war on drunken assholes.
rude!

I saw that piece in the Melbourne times too, made me a bit mad. If they want peace and quiet they can move to Nunnawading or something.
I think the problem is also aggravated by the fact that the new arrivals moving into their 'warehouse apartments yuppie living', could hear a mouse fart in the next door neighbours living room because all the walls are made of cardboard. Maybe if the developers built the apartments a bit better they wouldn't be so many complaints about noise.
Maybe if the yuppies didn't buy these jerry build wanker pads the developers would make have to build them better.
that's all

the way i see it every strip has a few shithole venues that spoil it for the others.
120 Bar on Johnston Street is a dive and usually between that and the Provincial there are enough wankers post 3am to make Brunswick St look out of control ... ditto for Smith Street which has a few venues that get a wrong crowd.
if people want to lobby against licenced premises in these strips it'd be a pretty easy sell ... stroll down either on a fri/sat night after 1am and it's easy to find isolated incidents of nastiness ... in the 18 months I played at Bimbo every Friday I would have seen at least 30 decent punchons after 3am walking to my car/souvlaki king.
