Paranormal, Supernatural and the Occult

Post by NakedAge »

I've noticed that alot of you are into science type subjects, as well as other cool shit.

Are any of you into the paranormal or, ghosts, aliens, psychic stuff and so forth?

Even in a science based type of way?

I'm into it, from a rational point of view. Most things can be explained with a little thought, check out the TED.com Video with the head of the American Skeptic Society, Michael Shermer.

I used to think i had run ins with "ghosts" "spirits" whatever
Then someone put me onto Sleep Paralysis.
Which pretty much summed up every experience i had, not being able to move, seeing shadow creatures feeling something walk on my bed.
Terrifying stuff, normally brought on by lack of sleep/not taking care of myself. Since being sensible have not had an episode for about 6 months but would not wish it on anyone
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis

from asking around i think its fairly common.party lifestyle def a great trigger.

Yeah. My olds house is haunted. Some people have died in there.
Pretty creepy actually.
Didn't believe in ghosts until I actually saw one. Vehemently denied their existence actually.
Now all my best friends are ghosts.

None are as creepy as that crazy-eyed, white-clad psycho above though.
That thing gives me the colly-wobbles.

that ghost tours bloke's a pisser though. tells this crap story about the ghost where I work.
Yeah, a few people have seen or felt it. His story about it is so embellished though, I reckon his ghost will get bashed when he dies.

I think it was on a thread here someone first told me what it was. Had 100% believed in my ghost friend until then. Kinda disappointed TBH, I liked her.

Are we talking about the same thing? I've had occasions where I wake up completely unable to move. Am totally aware, almost freaking out, but there's a buzzing in my limbs that won't let me move even a centimetre. I used to think I was having a stroke or something, really scary shit. Would have preferred it to be supernatural tbh, at least it's external. When you're fighting your own brain to have control over your body, that's a little disconcerting.

Speaking of ghostly things, I hear my Dad walking the hallways at night sometimes. At least I hope it's him  Pops used to get up at the buttcrack of dawn and meander passed my room to go to the bathroom. He used to wash his face in the same manner a dog shakes water off it's body, the sound is unmistakable. I hear this sometimes. I got up to check once, to see if it was Mum. Nada, nothing, zip. I said "hi Dad" and went back to sleep.

Before he passed away, house noises used to freak me a lot but I sort of feel like I've got a friend on the other side, protecting me and shiz. Now my parents take care of me from both sides of the fence

yep thats sleep paralysis, basically when you drop into REM, you become paralysed so that when you dream, you dont run and jump all over the place potentially injuring yourself.
So when sleep paralysis occurs, its a mix up of your brain being semi awake yet your body will still be paralysed.
You can use it your your advantage and try to lucid dream while in this state.

You know, by the 5th time it had happened I looked it up. I didn't come across sleep paralysis (which is dumb given my description was 'paralyzed while sleeping') but I read some stuff on astral traveling. I tried so hard but came up with nothing. What success have you had matey?

hey mixxy, ive not had much success yet as i stopped writing in my dream diary which is a technique used to start recognising dream situations as you tend to have re-occuring dreams. Trick is to recognise that you are dreaming then calmly control what is occurring (if you get too excited you wake up) Every time so far that i have recognised i was dreaming i woke up as i got too excited (doh) so havent really been trying much lately, but i should get back into it.

I do recall a rather spooky sleep paralysis that occurred while on holiday in Thailand on Phi Phi island, i was "visited" by a young girl, probably 12-15, it was really vivid and scared the shit outta me. She was trying to speak to me but i was just trying to wake up and ended up sitting upright in such a rush that i actually launched out of the bed. It occurred to me later that if it was a ghost that it could have been someone killed in the tsunami that was staying in my room at the time.

yeah man, there's nutting wrong with tryin

I've read heaps of stuff on astral traveling...some people can do it at will. This one particular report I read was of a psychologist (we'll call him Max) in the 60-70's playing around with the mind basically. He was able to control his lucid dreaming to the point where he believed he was visiting people in his sleep. So he conducted an experiment whereby a colleague would write something on a piece of paper and fall asleep with it in his hands. Max commenced his astral travel and said he felt connected to his body via an umbilical cord attached to the nape of his neck. He was able to pass through walls and doors but would often feel a tug at the umbilical if he got too excited, like he needed to get back to his body. So anyway, Max travels to his friend's house and does his thing. Next day he rang his friend and told him not to sleep so close to the fire cause he had singed his slippers. He also quote the note the man held in his hand. The friend checked and yes, there were fresh singe marks on the dudes slipslips and he'd quoted the passage correctly.

I dunno if this is true, but jeez it sounds like fun. Just imagine all the cool information you could glean...blackmail city lol.

same.

I like energy too. Energy is ace. I like the kind you can feel like the vibe in a room, the vibe from a person, the 'heat' you feel when a cutie walks across the room to talk to you...all very cool. Non-measurably and not particularly scientifically cool.

science is great foo, yes, and wed all be closer to death without it.

but can you deny the fact that not everything of on and around this earth is pure science?

okay yes, im confusing today. i blame rainbow and linux.

what i mean to say is, surely even those who are scientists, who beleive that there can be a number and a formulae and an explanation for most phenomena on earth, would admit that there is SOME things we cannot explain with science,
and so perhaps majick, esoteric knowledge and paranormal occurances can and do happen?

i know there is scientists of sorts here, what do you think?

fair enough. it's hard to get into this without trying to cause offence though. a lot of people get quite deeply offended when you discuss religion: and, given the theological base, a lot of people feel the same way about these kinds of things. i believe nothing falls outside the realm of science, but i don't think it should cause offence any more than belief in the supernatural to hugh & i.

i think we starting to get philosophical here.

i'm no scientist, but when i was failing year 8 physics and chemistry (particuarly chemistry, just couldn't get the whole shells + electrons thingy - mind you our teacher was possibly the worst on the planet) one thing i did kind of pay attention to was the whole null hypothesis thingy which I believe is the basis of all science (someone step in and correct me here if neccesary).

so anyways what I'm saying is that science in its entire history has never actually proved anything at all, its only failed to disprove it, what i mean is insofar as a scientist will make an observation and construct a hypothesis, construct an experiment to test it, and if the experiments fails to disprove the hypothesis then it is held to be true.

because, as science quite rightly realised very early on, there aint no such thing as proof, only lack of disproof.
