Melbourne party flyer shite...
Melbourne party flyer shite...
...yep, this is one of those wheedlin' mails about Melbourne rave party flyers, so I apologise profusely in advance!!
Nope, I haven't gone all soft and gooey and nostalgic... or maybe I have...? Hmmm. I'll back to you on that one.
But, anyways, I'm looking out for old '90s Melbourne event flyers, lo-res is fine, of Every Picture, Hardware, War Of The Worlds, Omniglobe, Earthcore, Innovator, Zoetrope, Zeitsprung, Club Filter, Teriyaki, 33 1/3, TransAtlantic, etc, etc.
If anyone can be arsed here finding 'em in old moth-eaten cardboard boxes, then putting 'em up here... then great!! If not - that's cool, too. Call it bizarre curiosity after almost 6 years abroad...

Maybe just to show that we (melb) have a past and we didn't just pop up overnight. We didn't just wake up one morning, look out the window and say hey it's rocking here. There were some of us that having been putting into the scene for well over 10 years, and just might be proud of we accomplished, so people can say it's rockin now. Drum and Bass didn't just pop up overnight, back 10 years + ago there were people putting in the hard yards into the scene to make it what it is now. And thats is the reason it is rockin now. Back 6 plus years ago, before the real raves got commercialised, we had a thriving scene, which was attracting some of the biggest names to come and dj at the best underground parties in Australia. What's not to be proud of ?factory worker wrote:why would you want to prove shit was going on 6 years ago, when its rockin here right now?

No mate, not living in the past, it's a case of respect the past so you know where you're going in the future.
In Derrick May's own words "Melbourne is the capital for dance music in Australia" - MEF 2001
Like i said we have a very good past, isn't that something to be proud of ? What's so wrong about showing your age ? Cause we do have something to be proud of.
Fw, without some of these people from the past we would not have the future we do, think about it ? Regardless of what you think about Richee Rich, Will E Tell and the likes, without them and the other like them, we (melbourne) would not be where it is today, that simple.
So i'm not living in the past, just respectful of it. The best way forward is to remember and be repectful of the past so you don't make the same mistakes of the past.

No doubt. but dredging up memorabilia form the past is best left to old people with no future to look forward to.Snowie wrote:No mate, not living in the past, it's a case of respect the past so you know where you're going in the future.

Ummm old people with no future......Mark James (runs Future Entertainment)......Ransom (still one of aust most respected dj's).......Hess (runs his own label, make mega $'s djing all over asia).....
Well, that's fine you think that, but we'll see in a few years when we look back on your career djing and putting on parties and see if you even come close, these old people you refer to have done more and are still doing more than you.
Mmmmm, no future to look forward to......

I wasn't dissing nothing but the fact peeps were looking for old flyers. never said anything about current peeps in the scene. fuck it, I don't even care about Future Entertainment, was having a go at being retrospective. I think thats sad thats all.Snowie wrote:Ummm old people with no future......Mark James (runs Future Entertainment)......Ransom (still one of aust most respected dj's).......Hess (runs his own label, make mega $'s djing all over asia).....

You don't even know what I've done or what I'm capable of in the future. Keep it in check bro.

I'm sorry if you interpreted what i said the wrong way, but when you say "the past is best left to old people with no future to look forward to." that is disrespectful to basically the whole scene and everyone who came before you.
I personally think there's is nothing sad about being retrospective, as it you shows where you've come from, and what accomplishments you have been achieved, which then gives a solid basis to move forward as you know what you are capable of.
This peep who is looking for flyers ran many a party and a record label showcasing melbourne producers for a number of years. I think he has earnt the right to look back on some career highlights. Don't you ?

Some people like having memories around them, who gives a shit whether you'd have em around or not? He wants them, so he's asked for some.
Ive got a box of all old fliers, i love looking through them every now and then. Reminds me of old times, the fun I had, people I might have been with then that arnt around more, all sorts of things.
Agree with every single word Snowie said, well written my friend.
I dont understand why someone would need to be questioned for simply wanting old memories, or similar? Just because an or some individual/s doesnt do the same.

Not really. I beleive thats what you did by posting a neg in thread you dont agree with. Why would you give a shit if someone wants posters of old parties when your not someone who keeps things? Why even care if its not your thing?factory worker wrote:So you question or put down my opinion instead. Did you go to the Semi Party out in Coburb Grey Son ?, it was pretty damm good. The venue, wicked, just like stepping back to the days of underground warehouse raves. Banging Electro/Techno, a stack of familar faces, Hi Rob & Mij. I heard that the messy party on that night was also a wicked event too. Luke and the Messy Crew put on a good event, i'm just hoping they do the Dytes Falls on a sunday avro again like last year...hint, hint, hint....

i used to have loads of lfeirs too, from my trips back to san fran and my first parties in adleadie, where i 'found' electronic music.
and even though i AM sentimental, and hang onto wierd things to remind myself where ive been, i no longer have any of them due to too much travelling around.
i totally agree with snowie here, the past is just as important as the future, and as someone whos been on the fringes of quite a few scenes here over the last decasde, i LOVe seeing where it is now in comparison to then.
the music isnt the most important part to me, its about the resons for putting on parties, the love of getting friends together and putting on something for LOVE, not just money.
which is why Im an avid supporter of the carni semi parties, and tehcnior;s new young, ken crew with so much energy, and the messy philosphy that makes for such great dancefloor antics and people.
I truly truly hope i can remember it all when i am old and decrepid...

^^ Well said Ghetto Kitty.
I have lot of the flyers ranging back from about '94 thru til '99, but i have no scanner. If somebody was to help me out and scan them in, i'll happily go dig them all out.

...wow... quite interesting comments here, and divergent opinions aplenty. Sorry for causing a bit of an unintended ruckus!
The idea that the past is vital to the present is kind'a important to me - I majored in history at uni, ironically. For my thesis I looked at industrial music in Britain in the '70s (Cabaret Voltaire, et al), without which the notion of "techno" probably wouldn't exist today.
It doesn't mean you stick your head in the sandbox; it's just respect while looking forward.
If you ignore the past, then you're ignoring the depth of your own culture. And you miss out on so many bonus extras...
Blah, blah, blah. Sorry, I'm rambling.
Thanks for ALL the supporting comments above.
You guys rock.

Factory Worker, you need to get out of the factory and open your mind up just a smidgeon. If you take a bit of time to check out some old skool Melbourne stuff, you might actually enjoy yourself.factory worker wrote: sounds like you're livin in the past.

DBoy, your right on the money, EPTAS were definately the party, i personally enjoyed going these, as they put so much into to it. The Decor, the space, dj's, it really showed more than any other party on at the time. Tho not to say the other didn't care, but EPTAS did it on a big scale.BU's

i spent weeks making tiny carboard crystals with vodoo phil and getting lost in piles of glitter for those parties.
the decor crew alone was alwasy like twenty or thirty people.
i wish i had some of those fliers, my favorite was the square fluro and silver one with really intircate mayan type stuff on one side, think it was like number 13 or so ..?
i must say, fliers in general are getting kinda ordinary. its like, in the past, there was less spam around, so you could do a trippy and interesting flier and be asured that people would pick it up and look for more info..
but now they are getting simpler and simpler, so you grab the attention straight away, or be lost in a sea of hype.
bring back trippy fliers i say.
and a bigups goes to the darntootin crew (hanisey) casue alll their fliers had hand stuck feathers and glitter on them, if you were given, one, you really felt special, and the parties were always so intimate and amazing.

I was doing some spring cleaning on the weekend and found the flyer for the first Earthcore I went to at Easter in 1998. It was great just looking at it again and seeing which DJs were playing and who is still around today. I never imagined eight years later I'd be playing at Eartchore. Good times - both past and present!
