So you pay a younger cousin or sibling $5 to come with you to a Mac shop to show them their student card =p Actually, I think all the warranty details get put under it =/ not too sure though.

linux? bite your tongue. Mac OS X is based on BSD. that is, real UNIX. :P

you can run it as a X-Windows, SAMBA, HTTP, FTP, SSH, etc, etc server as needed. basically, anything you can do on a *NIX box can pretty much be done. all the interface with the *NIX layer is generally done via the Terminal application.

check the developer sites on Apple if you want (for more info on the kernel, etc).

otherwise all you'd need to do if you want *NIX wise apps, etc would be install Fink (which can grab any ported/native packages for the Mach kernel) and maybe a few other bits and bobs.

lynt wrote:I guess Mac resellers would be cheaper then Mac shops?
not really and they're the same thing (resellers/AppleCentres).

currently (soon to change though) the only Mac shops in Australia live at www.apple.com.au/store .. :|

Apple don't give the resellers much margin anyway.

you'll get more bang for your buck with a pc. for live use you'd be better of dead than dragging a windows pc on stage. Apple for stability, pc for cheap.

I pick up my G5 with Logic 7 in two weeks. I felt your pain as I read this thread. Like I said to the bloke at the apple store - " I proposed to my girlfriend two months ago and that wasn't nearly as hard a decision as choosing between Mac or PC."

no good for audio mate. emulators aren't designed for that shizzle and run at 70-80% speed at best.

well - emagic developed it for the Mac OS platform first, so stick that in yer Steinberg.

i'm sure your smart enough to know you need 64-bit windows to make it run. haven't heard of a 32-bit version working on a 64-bit platform. I could be wrong, I dunno about backwards compatabilty and the new format though. so flame away :)

so where did ya get your cracked copy from AO? ;)

XP works fine on the 64's. twas my dodgy generic RAM that was fucking with it. whacked some Corsair modules in it and its fucken sweeet.

XP 64bit is all over the net in beta at the moment anyway. not gunna do that just yet.

Music and Audio Maestro
With the Power Mac G5, music and audio pros have even more power at their fingertips to compose, record, edit, mix and perform. PowerPC G5 processors effortlessly synthesize instruments and apply effects, and up to 8GB of memory provides ample room to compose using an unprecedented number of tracks. The built-in optical digital and analog audio ports support new and legacy hardware, and FireWire and USB support connections to virtually any audio, MIDI and storage device. Fast PCI-X provides expansion options for digital signal processing hardware and external storage. Mac OS X with Core Audio can run several applications simultaneously, while Audio Units provide a robust plug-in protocol designed to work seamlessly across Audio Units host applications. And with state-of-the-art applications like Apple’s Logic Pro and Soundtrack, Digidesign Pro Tools, MOTU Digital Performer and Steinberg Cubase SX and Nuendo, you have a wealth of innovative software to capture your inspiration.

Over Four Times The Plug-ins As Pentium 4
To quantify the performance advantages of the Power Mac G5 for audio production, Apple tested Logic Pro 6.4.1. The Dell Dimension XPS, Dell Precision 650 and Alienware Aurora were tested using Steinberg Cubase SX 2.0.1. Apple created a processor-intensive workload containing multiple unique audio tracks, assigned five default reverb plug-ins to each audio track and tested each platform to see which application could play more plug-ins.

it'll have to be backwards compatible for at least 2-3 years, if not longer.

case in point: I have the box that I'm typing this out on running Mac OS X (10.3), which is a 32-bit OS running on a G5 (64-bit CPU); next to me I also have a G4 (32-bit CPU) running a beta of Mac OS X (10.4), which is a 64-bit OS.

speakin to a mac user, he said the ram is all cross platform, the harddrives all run on SATA (so any SATA drive will work) and most other parts you can add yourself from any pc supplier.

anyone verify this?

yes BUT you should get the top of the line ram from MAC since that’s what the systems are designed for. That is if you want your Mac to perform. Video cards need to be supported under OSX so you don't have the range as with PC. Not sure about hard drives.

absolutely correct. it ain't 1996 any more (that fucking Christ).

make sure you buy a decent brand though, like Kingston, etc.

Apple buy RAM from the same manufacturers as all the others, same as hard disk drives. no point paying a premium if you know your parts and how to install them.

video cards are indeed a very different story, even under Mac OS X, and should be approached with knowledge and significant caution.
